Capter one: The death of a King, the birth of nations
In the beginning, our land was one big country, ruled over by king Erulia. He had three sons and a younger daughter, who he loved very much. King Erulia could not decide with of his four children should inherit his throne. The oldest, Janice, was smart and cunning, and she had ambition enough to rule. But she was also ruthless and vain, and he knew the people would suffer under her, although the nation would prosper like no other.
Jared was the second oldest, and he was also smart in a way completely different than his sister, and inventor at heart. He had even invented a way to harness electricity, although he died before it could be perfected.* Still, Jared could use very little magic, and the people may not respect him.
The one he was most likely to choose was the second youngest, Derik. He was noble and proud, but not arrogant like his sister, his intellect almost matched Jared’s, and his magic was almost as strong as Adian’s. The only problem was his lack of ambition. He had no desire to rule the entire nation, he simply wanted wealth and some power.
Of the four, Adian was the only one out of the question. True, he held the most magic and passion of all of them, but he did not wish to rule in the least. He spent most of his time out in the streets, performing his music and spending royal money on the riff-raff, claiming they needed it most. Still, the king reflected, if all his children were to die today, chances were very good there were grandchildren floating about.
No matter who the king would have finally chosen, he died before it could be revealed. Naturally, Janice attempted to claim the throne, but was blocked by opposition from her brothers. They all wanted it, but wanted Janice on it even less.
As the country began to weaken because of the lack of leadership, it was decided to split the country. Janice would get everything from the eastern mountains to the endless sea*, except for the south Eastern harbor, witch would belong to Jared. He ruled where the ruins of the old castle are today, as well as much of the land to the chasm but for small area around and under the floating rock. This belonged to Derik, who got what he wanted: money, and a few people to rule over. Thus, the lands of Water, Earth, and Jariana were born. Fire was to come, and Jariana would become wind nation, but that is for next chapter.
