There is other stuff I could write about but I want to write down this experience and my feelings about it before they fade from memory.
I was standing outside with George and we were admiring the night sky. It was pretty clear out and the moon was bright. Several planets were visible to the naked eye and shining brightly in the sky. I stepped around to the side of the house to get a better view of the sky and I saw the most amazing thing. An immensely bright object was falling very quickly through the sky. It was burning red and green and left a streak of light in the sky behind it as it fell. It burned out pretty close to the Earth's surface, and I heard a bang sound a few seconds after it appeared to burn out. I have never seen anything like it before in my life. I have seen meteors and shooting stars before but never anything like this before. For a brief second it was actually a terrifying moment. I imagine seeing a burning celestial object falling so close to Earth brings out a primal fear, especially in a society where light pollution makes many celestial objects and events nearly impossible to see. It was definitely an experience out of the ordinary. That feeling of fear dissipated almost immediately and was replace by awe and wonder.
Seeing that left me with a peaceful feeling. A reminder of the beauty of our existence in the universe, but it was also a reminder of how fragile we all are here. Afterwards I wanted to just keep staring at the sky... hoping there was more yet grateful to have seen such a (seemingly) rare sight.
Coincidentally afterwards we saw an extremely bright light in the sky moving quickly. At first we thought it was a plane with super bright lights but it flew over us waaaay too quickly and the light configuration was very strange and very bright for a standard aircraft. It flew overhead and was flying very low but made no sound at all. It probably was just a plane or something, but it was kinda weird.
I can kinda see why the humans of old feared and revered the sky so much.
