The modern human has too much bias when it comes to thinking about history. For every person, there is a belief system - even atheism is a belief system.
But symbols. Nowadays, there are so many meanings to the same thing. Subliminal sexual messages in a Coca Cola ad, propaganda disguised as emo rock ... so many things attached to something that should remain simple.
Alas, there is no salvation for the symbol. The carrier of beliefs and prejudices.
There are 3 symbols especially that I must point out - the star of David (the hexagram), the crucifix, and the swastika.
First, the hexagram. This isn't Solomon's star (that's the 5-pointed one) - but it's quite often seen in old-school sorcery and alchemy - Look at Al's sealing circle - reminiscent of the hexagram ...
But my first point is such ... the star of David wasn't ORIGINALLY the key symbol of Judaism. In fact, outside of Judaism, the most occurences of the hexagram is in the occult, as shown in the magic circle below
Next ... the crucifix. A device of torture ... still is. But with Christian beliefs tacked onto it, it's "an arrow pointing to salvation." But even "primal" children drew this sort of thing, and the cross (more like a plus sign) was a pagan symbol ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross
The swastika is a touchy one. Not many people these days realize that the swastika was really a good luck symbol ... until the National Socialist party bastardized the whole thing and made it a symbol of evil.
The little bugger actually comes from neolithic Eurasia (the Caucasus area, perhaps), migrated to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia ... and was ORIGINALLY standing for good luck and wealth/health.
Thank you, Hitler, for ruining it for those of the three schools of Buddha, the Jain Dharma, and the Sanatana Dharma ... Thank you, you modern day posers for continuing the problem of making what was once a good symbol into something disgusting ...
We all attach meaning to symbols ... we just need to realize that there are more meanings for the same thing than we realize, and that we need to get up off of our asses and stop being IGNORANT about these other meanings.
