Well.... a Category 5 hurricane called Maria is approaching the island of Puerto Rico, the place where I have lived my whole life. To say I'm scared is an understatement, the island hasn't seen a hurricane this big and devastating in 89 years, I have been on edge since last Saturday (Sept. 16, 2017) when she was announced as a tropical storm heading towards us and just the day before I finally got back the electricity on my area after nearly 2 weeks of not having it because hurricane Irma, a cat. 5 hurricane as well, barely touched the island with her outer winds and still ******** us. My family and I have plenty of clean and drinking water, food and other supplies for the upcoming days but that doesn't stop us from being worried. Most of the houses in the island, including mine, are built of concrete and cinder blocks making them resistant to the winds and debris... others unfortunately are built from wood and are often not secured with steel cables and hooks to the ground so they might loose them in the process. Floods are inevitable in low areas, some folks living in the beaches or coast ares are refusing to take shelter despite the heavy warnings that have been given in the media. I live in a high area so I won't have any issues with floods, just winds and maybe debris. There will be a high chance communications will be down after the hurricane events for quite some time and the power will be down for months... I might come back to gaia and any other place in the internet who knows when in the next year; it all depends on how bad the hurricane will leave us down here and how quickly we can come on top. I have been scared some times in my life but not as close to have a mental breakdown like these past few days... this hurricane will change the history of this island for good. The island of Barbuda lost 70% of its population in a matter of hours because of a cat. 5 called Irma hit their island, I don't want the same for mine with Maria.
