Changing Waters: Part One |

A seagull circles over a small island in the middle of the ocean. Directly below it is a palm tree. I climb up higher, trying to get a better look at the bird. I break through the palm fronds just in time to see the seagull fly behind a mountain.
"Nina!!"
I look down. There stands my sister, Seri, hands on her hips.
"I need those coconuts, Nina."
"Yeah, yeah," I mutter, pulling my dagger out of my pocket and slicing the coconuts out of the tree.
"HEY!" Seri yells, jumping out of the way. "Watch it!"
"Is that enough coconuts, Seri?" I call down, laughing.
She throws a coconut at me, barely missing. But since she missed, I start to laugh so hard I fall out of the tree. "Ow!"
"Help me carry these back to the cottage. Unless you want me to throw a coconut at you again," she chuckles.
Grumbling, I pick up several coconuts.
Halfway back to the cottage, I glance up at the mountain. Something flickers at its base. Fire? Wait... Fire!
"Oh no... Seri, I'll come back for these! Fire! Don't worry, I got it!"
She waves as I race off toward the trees.
It's cooler under the trees, due to all the shade. It's very calming. Normally I'd stop and relax, but if there really is a fire, I can't.
Finally, I see it. But... something's wrong. It's a campfire! Nobody's supposed to know about this island but me and Seri. I creep closer and hide behind a bush. A boy sits, poking the fire with a stick.
Something rustles the leaves behind me. I slowly turn around, not wanting to alert the boy. Unfortunately for me, the something that moved the leaves was another boy, more my age. He pushes me into the clearing and pins me to the ground.
"Get off of me!" I shout, struggling to get up.
Don't get me wrong, I'm strong. It comes from having to take care of yourself on a deserted (or so I thought) island. But this boy was stronger.
"What are you doing here?!" he demands.
"I was going to ask you the same thing. Now... let... me... go!"
"Jay? Jay! Stop it!" the younger boy cries, pushing the older one off of me.
"Thanks," I mutter to him. Turning to Jay, I feel the anger of losing to this... this... "I live on this island. Me and my sister. We have for almost as long as I can remember."
Jay stares at me. I return his gaze. "I'm Jay," he says finally. "This is my brother Darian. It's just us. We've been here forever, it seems." With that, he turned and sat in front of the fire, his back to me and Darian.
Darian smiles at me. "Sorry. Jay's just very cautious. I'm sure you'll get used to him."
I smile back. It's hard not to like someone this friendly. "So how have we both been living on this island without ever meeting?"
"Well, we usually live on the other side of the mountain. But this morning, when I went swimming, I got caught in a current." He laughed. "Next thing I knew, I'm waking up on the wrong side of the mountain! A couple hours later, Jay comes and finds me in this clearing. This is the first time I've been on this side of the mountain. We have everything we need back at home, so we've never had the urge to come. Pity, though. To think, there were people like us, so close! We could've been friends."
I grin. "We can be friends now, though."
"Yes, we can! I'm glad you feel that way. Jay's always so suspicious." Darian sighed. "I'm sure he'll explain it to you. It's not my place to say."
"I understand."
Darian gazes at me. "Pardon me... but you said that you've been here almost as long as you can remember, correct?"
"Yeah..."
"What did you mean by that?"
"Well... When Seri and I were little... Actually, Seri doesn't remember any of this. She got sick and forgot everything about this story... Anyway. When we were little..."

Changing Waters: Prologue |

I trudge through the snow, struggling against the fierce winds that bite at my face. It seems that the blizzard is getting worse.
I pause to rest for a moment, my breath becoming ragged. But I have to make it to the ship!
Something cries out softly.
I look around, trying to find where the noise came from. Nothing's there except for me and the endless snow. I can't stop now, I think to myself. I take a deep breath and take a step forward...
Only to trip over a small mound. Something cries out again. I bend down and brush off some snow from the mound.
Two little girls are hugging each other close. One looks like she's dead, and the other stares up at me. I reach out my hand to her.
Slowly, timidly, she reaches up and grasps it.
"Help my sister," she whispers softly. "Please."
I pick up her sister and realize that she is not dead, just unconscious. The other child is still holding her sister's hand.
Suddenly, a light flashes through the snow, and the sound of a motor can be heard.
"Hey! Oliver!" a voice calls.
My heart skips a beat. "Piers! Piers!!"
The light flashes toward us, growing closer and closer. A man jumps out of the car. "Oliver, we thought that you had died! We need to get the ship going before the waters freeze..." he trails off.
The girl huddles closer to me, taking my hand. She stares at Piers silently.
"Oliver, who..."
"We have to get to the ship. This girl could die any minute," I say, carrying her into the car. Her sister gasps and rushes after me, climbing into the car with me.
Piers shakes his head and drives off.
Once on the ship, I take the girls to my quarters and lay the sick one on the bed. I then sit on the couch and call the nurse. After I finish talking to her, I gesture for the girl to sit on the couch with me.
She sits on the couch, looks around, and grabs a blanket. "May I use this...?" she asks quietly. I nod, and she unfolds it. She then carries it to her sister and lays it across her.
When she had returned to the couch, I hand her some hot chocolate. "Your sister will be fine; she just needs to get warm and get some rest." She nods slightly, draining her hot chocolate. "So, what are your names?"
"Names?"
"Yes. My name is Oliver. The man who drove us here is my friend Piers. The captain of this ship is named Luke. What are your names?"
She sips her cocoa. "We don't have names."
I blink, surprised. "Do you... want a name?"
Her eyes widen. "I can get a name? How?"
"Well, people name you."
She stares at me. "Can you name me? Me and my sister?"
I blink. "I suppose..." What should I name these girls? It has to be nice... Like my daughters. These girls are like my girls, I think. Back when they were alive...
"I got it! How about Nina for you, and Seri for your sister?"
Her eyes brighten. She breaks into a wide smile. "It's perfect."

"Nn... nnn.... Aaah!" I sit up, eyes wide, panting. Bad dream again. I close my eyes and sigh. Ever since we defeated Zane five days ago, I have had nightmares about him. Ugh. I need some water.
I swing my legs out of bed and shuffle toward the fridge.
"AAAAAAAH! NO! GO AWAY! HEEEELP!!!" someone screams from outside.
"Seri?"
I race outside to see Seri and Solon collapse, covered in blood. "SERI! SOLON!! NO!" I take a step forward.
"N... Nina..." Seri murmurs, shuddering. Her eyes widen, and she points behind me. "G... Get back! Nina... ZANE!!!"
I'm about to whirl around when someone grabs me. "AAAAAH! Let me go! NOOO!!!!" I shriek, tears falling from my eyes. Zane laughs and wraps his arms around me. I try to break free. "NO!!!" He laughs again, then releases me.
Wait... something wrong.
Seri and Solon are now laughing, too.
I look up at Zane.
But it's not Zane. It's Garen!
I put my face in my hands and start crying.
"Nina, 'cmon. It's our revenge for letting Zane out." Seri pats me on the back. "I told you this would be too much."
"Sorry, sorry!" Solon said.
Garen kneels down beside me. "You okay?"
I shake my head. Garen hugs me tightly. "Seri and Solon are okay, Nina. It's ketchup."
"Nightmares..." I sob.
Solon stares at me. "You have nightmares about him?" I nod. "Geez, I'm sorry."
"Nina? He's not coming back. Zane's dead, remember?" I don't respond. "Nina... He's not coming back."
Great. They pity me. That's not gonna last long, mark my words. "Solon?" I murmur.
"What is it?"
"Run. Now."
"What?"
Garen looks at him. "You better run. I can't hold her forever."
I wish he would. After I get Solon. I try to break free of Garen's grasp. Solon takes one look at me, and sprints away.
"Yes!" I shout when Garen releases me. Much to the amusement of Seri and Garen, I chase down a very terrified Solon.
Upon reaching him, I tackle him to the ground. "YOU ARE SO..... AAAH!!" Solon puts his hand in front of him, using it as a shield of some sort.
Seri and Garen are hooting with laughter. Chuckling, I get off of Solon. "Okay, you've had your revenge, you took it too far. Now we're even."
I walk back to Seri and Garen, Solon trailing behind.
"Seri?"
"Yeah, Nina?"
"You need a bath."

"Welcome back, Nina!" Seri pants, dodging Zane. Solon gives me a thumbs up, then shoots another arrow. Garen glances at me, then looks away.
There's got to be a weakness... a way to defeat this guy! I think. How was he beaten before?
Suddenly, an idea dawns on me. "Shadow spirits!" I cry. "That's the answer!"
I whistle, hoping everyone else will do the same. They do.
When they all see Zane, they merge together. A silver light shines throughout the clearing. I shield my eyes. Suddenly, the light is gone.
There stands Zane, his hatred for us burning in his eyes like the fire he controls. A silver dragon has it's tail wrapped around him. A woman stands before him.
I've seen her before...
"Zane..." she says, her voice echoing around us. I gasp as I realize she's not standing... but floating. "Zane, even from ages ago, you still can cause damage today. I didn't want to lose your soul completely..."
"Viyon," he sneers, spitting at her feet.
"Viyon?!" I gasp.
"This is a shame, Zane. I wish there was another way." Viyon raises her arms. Zane begins to fade.
"What?! You can't do this to me! Nina! Nina, please! Stop the demon! You understand me! We can end the hatred in this world... We can silence it with our power!"
"That's what I wanted to do, Zane. Stop the hatred. But not like this. Viyon's right. This is the only way." I close my eyes, unable to watch anymore.
Zane is gone, I can tell. it feels as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel warm. I open my eyes.
"Nina."
"Viyon."
"What you did wasn't your fault. Zane tricked you. But even though Zane tricked you..."
I look away, tempted to place the blame on Zane. I take a deep breath. "No. It was my fault. I wanted the power to create unity and peace. But now I see that peace created with power isn't peaceful at all. What I did was wrong, and I will take any punishment necessary."
"I'm not talking about punishment. Even though Zane tricked you, you still chose to be loyal to your friends. However, this whole ordeal has been hard for you. I believe that this has been punishment enough."
"But-"
"Oh, shut up and take it, Nina!" Seri snaps, stepping on my foot. She hugs me, smiling. "I'm glad you chose to stay... you."
Solon stickes his tongue out at me. "You scared the crap out of me. Do it again, and I'll put slugs in your socks again."
Garen stares at me. I stare back, then look down. "Garen, I'm sorry. You don't have to forgive me, but... I'm sorry." He pats me on the head, then hugs me tighter than Seri did.
"You're forgiven."
The End

"Good, Nina! Kill them! Kill them all!!"
The people who were my friends glare at me. They hate me, I can see it in their eyes. My eyes flash as I raise my sword, ready to kill.
I spin around and slice open Zane's shoulder. "Damn!" I cry. I missed his heart.
"So is this what you're deciding?" Zane says calmly. "This is what you want?"
I gesture at Zane. "No. This is what I don't want."
He grins cruelly, then points behind me. I whirl around just in time to see his shadow loom in front of me. It pushes me, and I fall...
...right into Zane's grasp. He easily knocks my sword out of my hand. "No!" I gasp. He now has me in a headlock. Flames dance across his fingertips. He holds the flames in front of my throat.
"Either way, I get what I want," he whispers triumphantly. "But you still may change your mind... once your friends are out of the way, that is."
He snaps his fingers and his shadow wraps itself around me, leaving me unable to move. "Run! Get out of here!" I cry, hoping that my friends will listen to me.
"Yeah, right!" Garen yells. "He won't kill me. Not until I save you, then kill you for getting us into this mess!"
"Nina, you are so dead after this!" Seri shouts. Solon grins, then flips me the bird.
I struggle helplessly, knowing that they're all going to die. Then, I remember that there is one thing that I can still do. I whistle shrilly. My shadow spirit races towards Zane.
Seri throws her dagger at Zane. Solon releases an arrow. My shadow bites him.
"Nina!" someone whispers from behind me.
"Garen?"
Garen whistles softly. His shadow merges itself with Zane's. Zane's shadow hisses, then disappears. Garen's shadow returns to him, growling in quiet triumph. I'm free!
I stand up, brush myself off, and close my eyes.
"You okay?" Garen whispers.
I lunge toward him, hugging him tightly. "I am so, so sorry. You have every right to hate me, kill me..."
"Well I don't hate you. If I did, you'd still be trapped in that guy's shadow," he huffed. "Now get offa me, so we can help the others."
"Oh. Sorry. Again."
I make a face to myself as we race off to help the others.

Garen races toward me, Seri and Solon right behind him. I stand up.
"We need to take of the protection spells," Solon said simply, slight mistrust in his eyes.
"Nina! I can't believe you talked to Viyon!" Seri exclaimed.
I felt the worst for lying to Seri.
Soon, we had all the wards canceled.
Wind started to blow as we put our hands on the four corners of the gate.
Finally. I am finally free! Now the worlds are mine!!!
The gate opens. A man steps through, arms extended. I walk toward him and stand by his side.
"Who are you?!" Garen demands, taking a step backwards, spear extended. Seri draws her dagger and Solon raises his bow.
The man laughs. "I... am Zane."
"Wh... what?" I back up, shocked. Zane grabs my wrist. I yelp and try to break free, but his grasp is too strong. "Let go!"
"Nina... you set me free. This is all because of you. This is what you wanted, Nina. We will unite the worlds under our power."
I glance at the others. Seri looks away, trying to hide her tears. Solon glares at me. Garen just stares. "Nina..." he begins. "You set Zane free? You... lied to us?" His eyes narrow. "Why?"
"No... I mean, I didn't... This isn't what I..."
Garen closes his eyes. "We'll stop you."
My eyes widen. I never wanted this. I wanted peace... but I think I've just doomed the whole world.
Zane pulls me closer. "See, Nina? Even those closest to you are ready to bring you down. You must join me. Then nothing can get in your way! Just imagine!!"
"I'm imagining, Zane," I say, facing my friends and drawing my sword. "And I know what I must do now."
Solon puts an arrow up to his bow. Garen grips his spear. Seri hesitates, then draws her dagger. Her hand's trembling.
I close my eyes, preparing myself for what will be the hardest battle I've ever fought.

"Nina... It is time."
I jump off of the couch. My heart is pounding from excitement. Now I just have to get the others to help open the gate... I race out the door.
"Nina?! What's wrong?!" Garen cries, steadying me.
I blink tears out of my eyes. I feel bad fooling him like this... but it can't be helped. If we're going to unite the worlds...
"Garen... we have to open the gate. Please!! Both worlds will be in grave danger if we don't!!"
"But..."
I squeeze my eyes shut, wondering if this is a good idea after all. "Garen... we have to! Please!!"
He looks away. "Why? That is... How do you know this?"
Should I do it? Should I lie? This would be the worst thing I could possibly say... I can't. But I have to! Yet...
I stare into Garen's trusting, worried eyes. "Viyon warned me in a dream."
Garen gasped. "She did?!" He blinks in alarm, then races down to Seri and Solon.
I sink down to my knees. "I did it," I whisper. "The worlds will be united, and all because of me." I smile to myself.
