Madela- the elf
Once upon a time, in a field of daisies (formally known as the field of meadows), there lived an elf. This elf was unlike any other elf you could ever meet, she was even smaller than the “usual” elf and she had an unusual name, for an elf anyway. Her parents weren’t unusual but they wanted her to be known throughout their forest village, which is how she got her name, Madela, which in elf language means “the watcher.” She had lived alone for most of her life, at least since her parents had died back when she was just a little elf. Visitors never came to the field of daisies; they were all too scared of the creatures that lived there.
Then, one day, a male elf came along. He was handsome; something about him made it so that Madela could not stop staring at him as he hummed while walking. She kept staring at him, it was almost as though there was a light surrounding him and Madela had the weird feeling that she knew him from somewhere. He was quiet, gorgeous and very frail looking and unlike anyone Madela had ever seen before.
Day after day, he would come and Madela would watch as he sat on a rock and talked as hhe feed the animals that came up to him. Madela hide behind a tree whenever she watched him although she sometimes would get the feeling that he knew she was there. Then, one day, he spoke to Madela.
“Madela, I know you’re there, come out and spend time with me.” He said in a soft, gentle, quiet voice. Madela, being surprised and unsure of what to do, looked quickly to see if there was anywhere that she could run and hide but finding nothing, she stepped out from behind the tree and slowly walked over to the rock he was on. “You have been watching me for the past few weeks, why?” He asked as a blue jay landed on his shoulder.
“I... ummm...” Madela wasn’t sure what to say, she didn‘t want him to think that she was some crazy stocker elf. “I saw you and I couldn’t help but watch. You seem so familiar to me.” Madela said with uncertainly in her voice.
“You don‘t remember my name?” He said with a certain sadness and uneasiness in his voice, “you think you know me because you do know me Madela.” He said looking up at her with her yellow eyes that were yellowier than the yellowiest sun Madela had ever seen.
“I do?” Madela said with puzzlement, “but I don’t remember your name or where you’re from or anything...” Madela said starting to trail off.
“Maybe because it wasn’t time for you to remember until now. There‘s always a certain time and place for everything.” He said as he got off the rock. “My name is Draven might ring more of a bell with you. Come now, there‘s work to be done.” Draven got up and started to walk towards Madela’s hut. After standing bewildered for a few seconds, she ran to catch up with him.
“It was a short time before you were born that you were chosen,” Draven started talking as soon as he was in a chair in Madela’s hut. “You’re older than you think; you’ve been on this Earth for over a thousand years. You were chosen to come back to Earth even though you were told that you wouldn’t be allowed to anymore.” He stopped as Madela took everything in. "I‘m over a thousand years old?” Madela said with total disbelief in her voice.
“Yes, you’re a thousand and 5 years old to be exact. But that‘s not the point,” Draven said rushing past it to get to the rest of the story, “We don’t have time to worry about your age, there’s more important things going on. You need to remember your past. Can you do that? If you can’t, then we’re in trouble.” Draven said looking up at Madela pleading with his eyes. “I need you to remember so that you can help me to get back, I don’t belong here, not now anyway. I’m supposed to be up there,” Draven said as he looks upward.
“Remember? Remember what? How can I help you?” Madela asked confused. “You need to remember what it’s like up there, before you get a human body. Remember a time other than being Madela the elf. That‘s the only way I can get back, you need to remember one of your previous lives.” Draven said as she stood up and walked over to Madela, “You need to remember, for me.”
“The only things I can remember are dreams that I have at night. About places I‘ve never been, people I‘ve never met but it seems so real, almost like I‘m there and talking and joking with them.” Madela said slowly as he thought about the dreams.
“That’s exactly what I’m talking about,” Draven said as he kneeled down in front of Madela, “sometimes people don’t remember them when they’re awake, it’s just by their dreams that they know of their past lives. Our minds have ways that they try to trick us. Is there anything else that you remember? Names? Or certain places? Who you were?” Draven asked starting to get excited and imagining being able to get back “home.”
“I don’t know,” Madela said as she stared off into space thinking some more. “I can picture their faces but I can‘t think of their names. In the dreams, sometimes I can hear them talking or I can hear myself having a conversation with some of them but I can never make out what‘s being said.”
“That’s ok, you don’t need to remember conversations just yet. For right now, just think about where you are. Try to think of what the place is called or another place that it’s near.” Draven said as Madela sat thinking.
“The clothes,” Madela said as she stopped to think, “they’re old. Maybe the 18th century. I can’t really tell though but they’re old.”
“That‘s ok, is there anything else that you can think of or that stands out?” Draven said as he looked up towards “home.”
After a long pause, Madela started to talk. “I remember certain sounds, and sometimes when I smell something, it makes me think that I’ve smelt it before. Kind of like deja vu. I can picture you. You were there too.” Madela looked up at Draven and he could see in her eyes that she knew, she remembered. “Sin? Is that really you? It can’t be, can it?” “Yes, it is. But not now, now you need to remember other things, please Madela, help me get back.” Draven said.
“I remember it more now. You were there. We were trying to get away from the witch hunters in Salem. Someone thought that you were a witch so we were running away from them.” Madela sat sitting and thinking long after she stopped talking. “How exactly does my remembering a past life get you back to your ‘home‘?” Madela asked Draven after there was a long moment of silence.
“It opens “the door” that allows me to get back home. I don’t really know how it works exactly other than you have to remember and then when they feel it’s the right time, they’ll let me back in by giving me a sign, something to do with a rainbow.” Draven answered.
“They? Who are they?” Madela asked. “That’s not important right now, you’ll know who they are when the time is right.” Draven said. “Can you remember anything else? Anything at all?” Draven asked seeming to get irritated. “No, I don’t think so, at least not right now anyway.” Madela said as a look of deep thought came onto her face.
As Madela sat and thought, Draven got up and walked towards the window. All of a sudden, Madela heard a gasp. As she turned she saw Draven run out the door.
“Wait! Draven! Where are you going?” Madela asked as she ran out the door to catch up with him. As soon as she got outside, she saw what made Draven want to get outside so fast. It was a rainbow, a beautiful bright rainbow, even more dazzling than anything Madela had ever seen before. As soon as she saw it, she stopped where she was.
“Madela!” She heard a voice call her name from what seemed like miles away. She looked to her left and saw Draven, as he started talking, she walked over towards him. “This is it! This is the sign that I was meant to find!” Draven said excitedly when Madela was standing next to him. “Thank you so much Madela, without you I wouldn’t have been able to get to this point.”
“So, what do you do now?” Madela asked as she stared up at the rainbow. “Walk into it I think and then I’ll be back home.” Draven said with in a far away voice. “Thank you so much for all you’ve done. If you hadn’t kept the memories in your head, I’d never be able to go back.”
As Madela stood and watched, Draven walked into the rainbow and disappeared. She stood there looking at the rainbow as it slowly faded away until it wasn’t there anymore.
