Little Brown Bear
His tiny hands reached in the air as they passed by the store window. This action caught his parents’ attention. His father slowed the wheel chair as he looked at the window, and then down at his wife. "Oh! You want the teddy bear?" He smiled. There was a small brown teddy bear sitting in the window. His fur was curly and ruffled. The brown looked almost stained, and was very glossy. The bear’s eyes were a beautiful deep brown. He walked into the store and purchased the bear. He left the store and delicately handed the bear to his new born son. He watched, delighted, as his sons face light up. “You like it Jeffory?” His mother asked. She watched as he sucked on the bear’s soft ears. She knew this bear would be around for a long time…
Four Years Later…
“Come on Jeffory!” She yelled to him from the bottom of the stairs. She watched him race down the stairs with his teddy bear clutched tightly in his hands. “Must you bring him everywhere?” She rolled her eyes. Jeffory brought his bear everywhere; the mall, to school, on his walks, everywhere. “Yes! I love Teddy!” She smiled at him and ruffled his hair. “I remember the day your father bought him for you…” Her eyes began to water and her smile disappeared. “Daddy…”The boys glanced shifted for his mother to his bear as he sighed. The two of them stood in silence for a moment. Then his mother sighed and ushered him out the door. Jeffory skipped down the street, stopping occasionally stopping to look at a bug or a flower. They held hands as they crossed the busy streets and stopped in front of his favourite toy store. “Look mom!” He smiled “Look at the cute teddy bear!” The teddy bear looked much like his own accept it was a bit larger. She smiled and told him to keep walking. He held his bear closer. “I hope he gets a good home…” He whispered.
Days went by and Jeffory would always pass by that window, but the bear was always there. He would always hold his bear up to the glass hoping the teddy bear would jump up and come home with him. But he never did. Jeffory always felt that this bear was a special bear, and really wanted him to go to a really good home.
One day, even though it was raining very heavily outside, Jeffory and his mom walked to the store. “He’s still there mom!” He frowned. Weeks had already passed since Jeffory had seen him in the store window. His teddy bear in one hand Jeffory leaned on the window sill. Suddenly a group of loud teenagers cane by on bikes, but Jeffory’s mom couldn’t grab him in time. One of the boys came really close, knocking the teddy bear out of hi hands. Jeffory’s eyes widened as he watched the bear fly through the air. The bear landed in the gutter and began to float away very quickly. “NO!” He screamed “TEDDY!” His mother grabbed him and held him back. She held him close as he wailed. Later that day Jeffory was in bed still crying. He’s mother slowly opened the door and came in. “Oh honey! Why are you so sad? It was just a teddy bear.” She sat down on the edge of his bed. “Be-because Daddy got it for m-me!” He sobbed, “And I’m-I’m never gonna see Daddy ever again!” Tears began to roll down her face as well. “But he’s always with you…” She held him close and they cried together. His father had died in a very serious car accident. The accident was caused by a drunk driver. Jeffory and his mom were at home when they herd the news. This bear was the last thing Jeffory had of his father.
The next day Jeffory’s mother brought him a surprise. “The teddy bear from the store?!” He smiled widely and held his new teddy bear close. He was still upset about teddy, but he at least had some one else to cuddle with. That night he was talking to his bear. “I miss Daddy and Teddy… You would’ve liked them both… Why did Daddy have to die? He didn’t do anything wrong! And why did Teddy have to disappear? He was my last piece of Daddy! It’s not fair…” Jeffory yawned and clutched his bear. Slowly he drifted off to sleep. The teddy bear shifted slightly and rolled off the bed. It stood up and walked quietly over to the window. He climbed on the window sill and looked out on to the streets below. I will get him back for Jeffory, he thought, I will!
The next morning Jeffory sat up and looked over at his window. “TEDDY!” He jumped out of bed and ran over to his bear. He held him so tightly as if he could disappear at any second. “I am so glad your back!” He beamed “Mom was right! Dad was here with me all along!” He looked over at his new bear,” He sent you to remind me and help make me happy again!” He bounced around his room with his two bears in hand. He stopped and heard his mom coming up the stairs. “Is something wrong sweetie?” She asked as she opened the door. Jeffory smile bigger than ever,” I found Teddy!”
The End!
