I was thinking about the term of civil union last night before I went to bed.
Civil:
of citizens in their ordinary capacity, or of the ordinary life and affairs of citizens, as distinguished from military and ecclesiastical life and affairs.
of, or in a condition of, social order or organized government; civilized: civil peoples.
adhering to the norms of polite social intercourse; not deficient in common courtesy: After their disagreement, their relations were civil though not cordial.
Union:
the act of uniting two or more things.
the state of being united.
something formed by uniting two or more things; combination
For the context that I was thinking about civil unions deals with the seperation of church and state which our forefathers more or less attempted to achieve in our government. There has been so much debate over what constitutes a marriage and a lot of it has all boiled down to religion, politics and morality. If the government did it right though, then all of that could be decided by those joined in a civil union. I'm thinking do away with common definitions of marriage as far as the legal aspect and make it so that even man and woman marriages are defined by the government as a civil union. The couple on their own can tell whoever they want to whether that means they are "married" or not.
Civil unions could honestly be the way of the future though when I think about it. Roomates could have the option of filing their taxes together without necessarily being romantically involved with one another or having a combined bank account. Room mates afterall are sometimes known to share living space, food, money and utilities. It could be a very good option for room mates and marriages alike to have the option of civil union as it leaves the actual relationship of the people involved to them for further definition outside of the term "civil union" and the government out of the relationship aspect while giving the people options which might people help them in their ways of life. This idea however will need much refinement before a good deal of people can really be convinced enough to agree on it together and make it happen.
