WTF is an ARG?
An ARG is an Alternate Reality Game. This means that it's a large game that interweaves the world of the story (In this case, Gaia) with real life.
Games such as this are popular as viral advertising methods.
How do they work
Essentially, they work by setting up a Rabbit Hole. Such as a phone call, an email, or a webpage. The Rabbit Hole is what breaks the 4th wall between the real world, and the games world. From that point on, the worlds become intertwined. Ads from the fictional world will appear in the real one. Phone numbers mentioned should work. etc.

The Rabbit hole would be a secret message. From a mysterious NPC, beckoning us to try an uncover the truth about... something or other.
This would lead to websites apparently run by NPCs, email addresses, (and possibly Phone numbers) that worked. Videos in cinemas, databases, quests within quests. The quest would use every aspect of the site (and even a few that appeared to be offsite, though really aren't)
And with every chapter solved, an item would be rewarded. In the end, the users who manage to finish it would win an amazing prize, and everyone would learn alot about the plot. I'd like it.

That aside, I love the idea. ARGs are getting common place, and hopefully Gaia will implement this better than Neopets tried three years ago. "Yeah, this huge image is alpha-channeled, so if you color the alpha channel, you get a secret message telling you that you need to stop messing with our copyright images!"
