Period 4.

A Biography for Button Gwinnett

Everyone knows of the great John Hancock and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but what about Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island? Or Carter Braxton
of Virginia? Or even of the Button Gwinnett of Georgia, the one who held so many
high political offices and did so much the country of the United States? When people look upon the names of those brave few who so boldly risked their
lives to sign the Declaration of Independence, few take the time to think back and realize that these were actual people with lives and a background. Each of which holds an unique and interesting story, especially Button Gwinnett.
Button Gwinnett was born in the April of 1773 at Down Hatherly, Gloucestershire, England to a Welsh Clergyman and an English mother. Both of his parents were well respected in their time and thus he was given a higher education then most people of the time. Not much is known from this period of time, but he did marry at age twenty-two in 1757 to Ann Bourne. Button and Ann had three children; Amelia, Ann, and Elizabeth Ann Gwinnett. Two years after Button Gwinnett married, the couple emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1760, yet later he moved to Savannah in 1765 where be attempted to become a merchant. Although the merchant life was not one for him, he was still able to purchase St. Catherines Island and attempted to become a planter. He became very successful and in his free time began to take part in the local politics.
Button Gwinnett quickly became successful in politics, he had even won election to the Commons House of Assembly in 1769. Yet being in a high financial status, he sold most of his property and possessions and disappeared from the game of politics. That didn't last long. The Revolutionary crisis drew Gwinnett into the political race. His great enthusiasm for protecting the rights of the colonies quickly attracted the attention of and respect of his fellow citizens. On January 20, 1776 he signed the Declaration of Independence.
Although Gwinnett's life was grand, it was a short one. After his loss at the election for Governor, his hopes were shattered and marked the end of his political career. General M'Intosh, the winner of the election for Governor, celebrated his victory as not one of becoming Governor, but as disappointing and destroying his opponent Gwinnett. Over the years tension built between the two till finally Gwinnett's short temper and damaged pride provoked him to challenge M'Intosh to a duel set to the date of May 16, 1777. At only twelve feet both fired and both were wounded. Although M'Intosh later recovered and survived the incident, Gwinnett's wound was fatal and he died three days later on May 19, 1777 at the age of forty-five years old.
Button Gwinnett led a patriotic life that has greatly affected us, and our
freedom. All those who signed the Declaration of Independence are more then just an ink blot on a great document, they were people who led exciting lives, and through his sturggles of life, politics, and his tragic struggle, Gwinnett is definitaly the greatest of those who signed th Declaration of Independence.

Very good... but there is supposed to be two essays. Good job though. It's better than mine. But General M'Intosh, I also have McIntosh. They are the same person though, but some websites spell his name differently.

This is just the rough draft of the first one. sweatdrop

And yes, I know what you mean.
Some sites said that they had the duel on the 15, another said 16th.
One said he died on the 19, another said the 27.
