When I had moved from Deltona to the O.C. or Orange City, people acted and dressed so different. In Deltona, there were old people and nice young kids that ran around the neighbor hood, but where I live now there is a variety of people, blacks, white and even Chinese.
My neighbor is a scary tattoo artist and they made a racket with their music every night, it is hard to sleep. My other neighbors on the opposite side are newly weds and of course they do not have soundproof walls; they are not shy. I feel like I am living in the ghetto.
Today was my first day of school at Clear Lake High, I am trying to be positive about my situation, but the possibility of the school being anything like the neighborhood makes the negativity inside me made my stomach turn and I feel ill. As I was deep in thought, suddenly I felt a horrible pain on my shoulder and ribs. I found myself falling towards the ground, but when I looked up there was a boy staring at me blank with shock. Apparently, he had run into me.
"I..." Was all he said as he picked up the books I was carrying. His face was as light as an angel’s was. His brilliant features glowed with the sun beaming off his face near the school entrance.
"It's s'ok." I managed to say. He offered his hand to help me up. I looked at it for a second then grabbed it to find myself in an upright standing position. He pulled me up so fast I did not even see how I stood up.
"So..." I said at his smiling face. I could not help but smile back. His smile faded to an unpleasant look.
"Happiness kills." He said in a low tone of voice.
"Oh." I stared at him blankly. He turned and walked away with an ugly look upon his face. I wonder if it is something, I have said. Jerk! I let out a deep sigh and gasped for air, I didn't realize that the blow had knocked the wind out of me, and I hadn't took a breath till now, it all happened so quickly, leaving me dazed and confused.
As I walked, I thought of what just happened and it made my brain start to hurt, so I decided to focus on what I needed to do to get to my first class. I shoved myself through the crowds of people, looking down abash fully, finally reaching the principal's office. He stretched his arm out and motioned for me to come sit.
He was a young man, who looked to be in his early thirties, but he was very beautiful just like the boy that had knocked me down. His hair was light blond and his face was well defined, like a piece of art, hand sculptured by a professional artist. The light reflected off his small reading glasses. He pulled them down slowly and closed his eyes pinching the top of his nose, as if he was annoyed by my presence.
"So tell me...What's your name?" He said in a soft voice, eye's still closed.
I jumped. I had not realized things had become so silent; classes must have started.
"My name..." I suddenly forgot what my name was for a second. I was easily distracted by his looks that I forgot my name, but remembered it when I looked away.
"My name is Lexa."
"Lexa? Will you do me a favor?" He had put his hand down and pushed his glasses back into place, but his eyes did not look at me. They remained distant staring out his tiny window next to his black chair that would engulf me if I tried to sit in it.
"A favor?” My voice cracked. "What is it?" He pushed a packet of papers forward, meeting my gaze. My heart suddenly pounded faster, my palms started to sweat. My body froze like a mouse being stared down by a cat. His eyes were a fierce light blue, and his hands were pale matching his light blond hair. He smiled closing his eyes and leaning back. He went to brush a strand of hair out of his face but it fell back.
"I want you to take that to Garrett. He's in your first class. All you have to do is hand them to him." He paused, "Oh yes one more thing..." He took his glasses off and leaned closer to me, his face just inches from mine. My breathing increased, the scent of his breath was sweet and it made my head spin.
"You must never startle him." His voice was stern but so low it was hard to hear. He stood up turning to his window. "I think you should get to class now...Lexa." His back was facing me and when he spoke, it sounded like the last part...My name, he was repeating to himself. I nodded and got up slowly closing the door behind me carefully.
My first period teacher was a woman and she greeted me happily right when I walked in the door. She looked at the papers in my hand with questioning eyes. Then snatched them quickly before I had time to react.
"Are these yours?" She asked forgetting that class was still going on.
"No." I said shyly.
"Who's then?"
"Garrett's...I was supposed to hand these to him, the principal told--"
"Oh! Mr. Trevor! Why didn't you say so...Well go on, he's the kid with the black hair staring out the window. Garrett!" She yelled his name as if she was his mother. He turned his attention to her unsurprised. I could feel the whole class watching me as I walked to him.
"I believe these are yours," I said nervously, handing him the packet. He looked like the same kid who had bumped into me earlier. His face was blank and unreadable as he took the papers. He was the only one sitting by himself in the back with a book laid open on his desk.
"Lexa, we have no assigned seats so sit where ever you please." The teacher said happily, as she flitted back to her desk. I sat my things next to a girl with blond crunched hair. She looked at me with green eyes and smiled.
"Hi..." She whispered then laughed. I smiled and took my seat. She was short but cute and wore a black jacket with a heart that was printed between the zippers. The desks were paired in two's and I sat near the back so I had a clear view of Garrett. He was staring out the window again in his own reverie.
"Is he always like that?" I whispered to the girl.
"Yea, my name's Victoria...What's yours?" She slid a piece of paper over and whispered, "It's easier to write right now, Mrs. Sullivan will get mad if she hears us."
I thought for a moment, then wrote,
Oh, my name is Lexa.
I had no idea what to say to her, so I just slid the paper back on her desk. She read it then smiled as she wrote something back.
Mrs. Sullivan is so cool, so where'd you move from?
Deltona.
She kept the paper and her attention was on the teacher, Mrs. Sullivan. I looked back at Garrett. He was staring at his book. I tried to read the side but I could not make out what it said.
Victoria talked the whole time after Mrs. Sullivan was finished with her lecture and she wanted me to sit with her at lunch.
"So we'll meet on the stairs ok?" She said excitedly. I nodded... I really do not know where the stairs were but just agreeing made her happy and I was fine with that.
By the time lunch came around, I found the stairs easily. They were the only set there and Victoria was standing near them. She had a huge grin across her face like she had some roomers to spread.
"You'll never guess!" She started out. She grabbed my hand and led the way to the cafeteria lines. "Ok, do you remember Garrett?" I nodded. "He's so hot isn’t he? Do you think he'll ask me to homecoming?" I had not heard that homecoming was in a few weeks. I don't think I will go anyways but why does she think that Garrett's going to ask her? By the way, I see it he hates people.
"Did he ask you?" I asked
"No, but by the way he was looking at me in first was weird."
"Are you sure he was looking at you."
"Yes." She glowered at me.
We got our lunches and sat with a bunch of her friends at a table inside. I could see Garrett and found myself surprised when I saw he was with a bunch of his friends and he was actually talking to them. I glanced over at Victoria she was already in deep conversation with her other friends. From what I heard, she was talking about her plans for an upcoming birthday party and how she is going to invite Garrett. When I snuck a glance at Garrett, again he was missing from the group of friends. There was a beautiful brown haired man with a gorgeous blond-- wait that's the principal, Mr. Trevor. And there was supposed to be a Garrett sitting in between but he is gone. I scanned the lunchroom carefully.
"So are you coming too?" Victoria turned to ask me.
"Huh- yea." I said not really hearing what she said; I was still looking for Garrett.
"That's great!" She said happily. I stood up.
"I'm going outside."
"Okay." She turned back to her friends.
I felt awkward enough just sitting with her group so I decided to look for Garrett outside. A hot breeze floated through my hair making my hairs stand on end. I stiffened when I saw he was at a nearby table by himself. I know he saw me but his gaze was off in the distance. When I walked up to him, his eyes met mine.
"What." His voice even, his face unreadable. I sat near him, setting my hands in my lap.
"Nothing." Tensely he watched me; he clenched his jaw and turned his head. We sat in silence for a moment.
He rose like a ghost and started to walk away.
"Wait!" I yelled. He turned his expression fierce.
"What do you want?" He pressed his hands to his sides to keep from shaking. His fists clenched.
I stared at him shocked. "Why are you..." I demanded, almost successful in keeping my voice steady. He came up to me quickly, without flinching, he gripped my collar harshly.
"Don't talk to me, you think you know people but you don't!" He said just low enough that it caught no one's attention. He strode off almost floating through the crowds. I did not say that I did, but some how I know there is good in him.
