That morning, those of us assigned to that particular project, got together with volunteer carpool-ers who were willing to drive us to our sites. Once we arrived, we saw how adorable the little campus was--everything was so colorful and cheerful and beautiful for the little ones to feel at home.
The kids get served breakfast; that morning, they got these little sausage/biscuit sandwiches with orange slices and milk. They ate in silence, in our presence, mainly shy and a little bit intimidated by our presence. But then, after breakfast, they have reading time with us; they warmed up to us pretty quickly! After just a few minutes, they were sitting in our laps, asking for more stories to read.
Then, they headed to class. During their time in class, we were setting up their little culinary lesson--every Friday, they have arts and crafts as well as a snacktime/culinary lesson, with quick snacks they can make in just a few minutes, with the help of an adult. Some girls helped them make crafts (colored sand and sticky paper) and some other girls (myself included) helped them slice fruits and learn fractions as they made their fruit salad.
After the little ones had eaten, we cleaned up their tables and set them up for lunch. Since the school is a private one for preschoolers, where their funds come from private donors, there was nothing dealing with that "separation of church and state" crap, so they were able to pray before eating their meals. We helped them pray and we served them their meals of nachos, more orange slices, and milk.
After lunch, we, sadly, had to go. At school, we went into the chapel; we prayed, journaled, and shared our experiences with the other freshmen. It was a wonderful, heartwarming experience that touched me.
On the subject of my religiousness, for Lent, I've decided to do the following:
- o_____Cussing and saying the Lord's name in vain. This is something I'm working on this Lenten season, so that it can follow me the rest of this year, as well.
o_____Praying habits. I'm promising to say one small prayer every night, before I go to bed, whether that be one Our Father, Hail Mary, or St. Francis prayer, as well as one request for someone else (not myself!) for the next day.
o_____Eating meat. I've never gone vegetarian, but I'm giving up living any flesh of any animal this Lenten season. That's right--I'm going vegetarian for 4O days and 4O nights, and my dad's promised to do the same. This includes fish, as fish are living animals as well. Now, I'm not going vegan. That's a little extreme for me. I'll eat eggs and cheese and milk, so that I can have my daily intake of protein and iron and all that stuff I need.
Yeah, it's going to be an awesome, spiritually-cleansing Lenten season. But difficult. Oh gosh, difficult.
Oh yes! I've got a new quest.
I know these aren't winter items, but they're so cute and so basic, I think that it's necessary for me to have these items for special occasions year-round.
