Chapter 1
Sorace, a handsome young knight from Palaince Castle walks along a deserted lane on a starless night. On his neck was a ruby necklace, a gift from Princess Jocelyn. Sorace breathed deeply. Oh how he longed to see her face once again. Her radiant beauty is enough to bring a man to his knees. Oh how he wish for a moment with her alone in the fields riding on the castle's horses. But he remembered that she was about to get married soon after the king's birthday. Sorace sighed. He wished this night was filled with stars that twinkled brightly. He vow to himself that he will one day take her away from her father's castle and live together somewhere peaceful. No, he said. I'm on a mission. I cant think of her. He quickened his pace.
After a few minutes of painful silence, he heard a distant scream. He ran as fast as he could to the sound which was growing fainter and fainter by the second. The scream he heard was over the hill ahead of him. What he saw was devastating. No more than 13 dark knights clad in black was surrounding a bleeding girl. The girl looked no older than 15 years of age. He thought she looked younger than that and much prettier too due to her pale face.
"STOP!" Sorace shouted.
The knights looked around. They pointed their swords at him to warn him to stay away from the scene and to not get involved. He froze where he stood and watch them grabbing the girl's hair with such violence. The girl was whimpering and sobbing.
"Where are your parents girl?" asked one of the knights.
The girl continued to whimper. He shook her.
"Where are they?"he asked her again but this time much louder.
Still the girl stayed silent.
"I'm going to ask you one more time. Where are your parents?"
"I'm not going to tell you. I will keep my promise not to tell anyone where they are going," said the girl.
"Very well, on your head be it," the knight said. He raised his silver sword. The girl's eyes were shut tight, ready to receive the death blow. Suddenly, an arrow shot past and went through the knight who was about to kill the girl. The heavy sword fell with a heavy thud. It's user fell down with a crash which shook the floor. The other knights looked around.
Sorace stood there with a bow and arrow in his hands, ready to strike again. Funny, he thought. Their armours are so thin that my arrow manage to go through. The young girl looked at him. Run now! He screamed in his mind hoping she could hear him. The knights charged with full speed towards Sorace. Sorace ran towards a burning hut. The knights followed. He didnt look where he was going or what he planned to do. All that matters was getting away from the knights as far as possible. He crashed out of the hut and landed himself on the floor. His pursuers pounded on him like heavy black blobs of iron. He felt himself being lifted from the ground. One of the knights was holding him up while the others stood panting.
"Why did you kill our leader when we warn you not to interfere?" asked the knight.
Through the dim light issuing from the fire, Sorace could see a scarred face of the knight.
"I did it to save the girl you were torturing," replied Sorace.
"Do you know what and whom you are messing with?"
"Do i look like i care?"
"Dont you dare talk back with your unworthy mouth," snarled the knight.
"Who are you guys anyway?" Sorace asked blankly.
"We are the Knights of Illainya. We destroy what threatens our land and kingdom. That girl you saved was a member of the vampire clan. In fact, this village belongs to vampires," explained the knight.
"So let me get this straight. You want to exterminate the vampires to protect your kingdom? Doesnt make any sense to me," Sorace replied.
"The vampires have been killing our people for more than centuries and it's our duty to kill them. I would want you to stay out of our way the next time we slay the vampires. Understand?" said the knight.
"Okkayyy....," replied Sorace.
The knight release Sorace from his grip and all of them stalked off into the night.
