So I just got a letter in the mail from the I.R.S.- or, rather, my mother got a letter from them and I opened it, since I always do her taxes (it's a little hard to fill out complicated forms and read tax tables when you're legally blind). I went over the figures again and again before I mailed the forms, and I was absolutely certain everything was correct. Now, all of a sudden, this letter arrives claiming that the amount of total income reported on line 22 was incorrect, and they're charging her an additional $212. But the worst part is, they're also charging her interest for not paying on time, despite the fact that I mailed the tax forms to the I.R.S. in early March and they didn't send us any notice prior to this letter that there were any errors or that we owed any additional money. gonk
And here I was happy that I'd gotten a $404 refund on my federal income tax this year. I'm debating whether or not to call them and contest this on the grounds that it's unreasonable to say someone's late in paying when they hadn't been informed they owed anything in the first place. On the other hand, since I've always sucked at math, the original computational error may well have been legit, and the interest only amounted to 45 cents. So it's probably not worth the time and trouble,
