~Heart of Ice~
story
I screamed as the hot needle touched my icy skin. Then he laughed with pleasure as he touched my cheek. My eyes were burned, a fitting punishment for me. I am a vampire who killed humans and got caught. Instead of death they took my eyes, the key source of my gift. I opened them to see the world one last time.
When I opened my eyes I saw nothing but darkness.
“Your free to go,” someone hissed. I was on my hands and knees trying to find my way. I could hear an evil laugh. Then I felt something, a vibration. It was like the person’s laugh hit all the walls to show me were they were. I stood up and slowly walked forward.
Someone with a kind voice said, “Can I help you to the village.”
I couldn’t go back, I had to leave Italy. England was my true home. The kind person handed me a blindfold. I tied it around my eyes to hide the ugly wounds.
“Why help me?” I asked.
“Because I hate these vile vampires,” she answered.
They sent me on a ship back to England. We sailed for what left like months. My lips dry and my eyes black of thirst. I couldn’t hunt humans any longer. I had sinned too much already. When we hit land I hunted in the forest. Then I smelled something vile. It was a werewolf.
“Don’t see many blood suckers in these parts,” he hissed.
“I don’t hunt humans flea bag,” I shoot back. The werewolf left. I didn’t smell like human blood so he had to take my word for it.
After hunting I started to get used to being blind. I walked and found myself in a village. My clothes were ripped, blood dripped from my face and hands. I was a monster. I cleaned my face and fell down when I heard footsteps.
“What happened to you child,” asked a man.
“I witch hurt me,” I cried wolf so to speak.
They took me in and let me live in the village. It wasn’t hard to hunt and live with humans. Then the soldiers came demeaned the women. I was dragged from the sweet village and made to stand in front of the king.
“What are your skills girl?” he asked, his voice was vile in my ear.
“I can sing and dance,” I replied.
He took the shackles off my wrists and pushed me on stage. I sang the words that came to mind and danced to the vibration in my voice. Then I heard cheering and clapping.
“That was wonderful my girl,” the king smiled.
My girl? I wasn’t anyone’s; he didn’t even know my name. With that I was given a room and made to sing and dance every night. At night I would hunt. Human’s blood was more filling.
The next day I walked around the castle, hearing and feeling the walls and ground. I worked at dinner, so exploring was something to pass the time. The knights would follow me. Not because they thought I was stealing, they said they loved me and wanted me. Most women of this age would love this. I hated it! They were like puppies looking for someone to take them home.
At night I would sing my heart out hoping someone would hear the tears of my past. No one even did, the humans thought I made them up on the spot. There were a few witches; the cuts on their hands gave them away. The vile smell of werewolf was strong. The king treated me like a princess and not a dancer. I refused all gifts. I needed nothing.
I never slept because my human life was a nightmare I never wanted to relive. My father was a kind man how loved me dearly but he died when I was 12 years old. My mother was a wicked woman how despised me deeply, till I grew ill. Then a kind doctor came to help me. She begged him to save my life and so he did. I will never forget the pain. The venom burned my blood and my skin became cold and hard like stone, my hair soft like silk and my eyes became blood eye. After three days the doctor show me to hunt animals. He gave me a new name Luna Twilight. His name was Neko Twilight and his daughter Reiru Twilight. His gift was he could see and hear for miles. Her gift was she could heal anything by the touch. My gift was I could see for miles just like Neko. I couldn’t fight the urge to hunt humans so I ran away. I couldn’t face Neko after all this.
One night after hunting I thought of my family. We never had much. Our house was old. I walked around not making a sound. The king was always showing off his gold to me and offering me gifts. Why not take what I want? From that night on I stole gold from the king so when I went back to Neko I could help him and make everything right.
The next morning I heard a knock at the door.
“Luna are you there?” it was the king.
I let him in. I was at my vanity brushing my long black hair and cleaning my face.
“Yes king what is it?” I asked.
“There is a thief in this castle somewhere. And I want you to be safe,” he paused.
“King don’t trouble yourself,” I spoke shyly.
He told me to pick a knight. I didn’t want to pick one. They’re like untamed dogs that I didn’t need following me. By the end of the week I said no to 17 knights. I walked down the halls to the dinning room and I bumped into someone.
“Oh sorry I didn’t see you there,” the boy said.
“I’m ok I didn’t hear you,” I said getting to my feet.
He stood there. He had the sweet blood I ever smelled in my life. My mouth started to water. I moved back I didn’t want to hurt him. My eyes where no doubt black from thirst.
“I’m Reno Wolf, I’m a new knight here,”
“Luna Twilight, dancer,” my words were shaky.
He offered to help me to my room or anywhere. I declined because I could kill him, and I didn’t want that.
I sang and danced to a new song. If I could cry I would but my tears dried up long ago. I walked off stage and over to the table where the king was.
“Luna beautiful singing as always,” he smiled.
“Thanks king, and I am sorry about not picking a knight. Being alone is what I’m used too,” I bowed.
The king laughed I hated that it was never good. He put his hand on my shoulder.
“Reno he is a new knight and he will be your protector,” he laughed again.
“No king it’s alright really,” I begged.
By the end of it Reno was to be my protector. He was the one who needed protecting. He stood close by His blood smelled so sweet. I didn’t have to breath but people would see something wrong. I left the table and Reno followed. I kept my distance not wanting to hurt him.
“It’s late so I’m going to bed now,” I said
“Alright I’ll stand guard out here,” he smiled.
When I got in my room a laid on my bed. It was like he was summoned from Hell to ruin everything I fight against. At this point I wanted to walk outside but I couldn’t cause I had a feeling the king was up to something. I got up and went over to the window the ocean breeze stuck to my skin. It felt good, until the door open and Reno fell in.
“Luna what are you doing?” He was shocked.
“The ocean breeze is nice, I’m not going to jump,” I laughed.
He told me about the king. Reno must be in my room. I don’t sleep and I need to hunt. He was uncomfortable. He sat in a chair as I moved to my bed. When he fell asleep I would hunt. I lay there waiting for him to drift away. When he slept I jumped out the window and hunted. I fed more then usual. I stayed close to the castle so I wouldn’t have to run far. I was back before morning.
He woke up at sunrise. I sat at the end of my bed.
“Good morning Luna,” he yawned.
I smiled and put my hand out the window. The water hit my hand like tears, and I giggled with delight. Reno must have thought I gone crazy. But I could only go out in the rain because the sun made my skin shine like diamonds.
“Beautiful day,” I smiled.
“It’s raining how is it beautiful?” He asked.
I took his hand and pulled him along. I will make him want to quit if I have to. Part of me didn’t want him to leave my side. But I needed to protect him for me. When we reached outside I let go of Reno and danced down the path to a song that went though my mind.
When I was standing alone I thought of you,
And I cried.
No one can save,
I need your love more than life.
Now I see my tears…”
Spinning and dancing down the path I continued to sing. I could hear Reno walking slowly beside me. Could he hear the tears of my past? He stopped and took my hand. I faced him the rain is hitting my face.
“Your past was that hard?” He asked.
“You could hear it?” my words were weak.
He pulled me closer and embraced me. I pulled away his blood smelled so sweet. That caught me off guard I pulled away. I knew he was confused but I couldn’t tell him.
“I’m sorry Reno. I’m not used to contact.”
“I see, I know what it’s like to have nothing,” sadness filled his voice.
“When I was kid our village was full of witches and werewolves. My father was good to them and gave them a home. The king raised the tax so my father would get the money. One werewolf got so mad his angry took control and he killed everyone in the village but me.”
I wanted to embrace him to comfort him, but I couldn’t do that or I would no doubt kill him. What do you say at a times like that, without feeling like a jerk. My mouth would move but no words would come out. After ten long seconds Reno let out a sigh, “I’m sorry I told you that.”
“It’s alright, you’re a nice person. Many knights don’t care about people like me. No one but you has heard my tears of my past in the song. My past is a nightmare I don’t want to remember.” I smiled.
We walked for a few hours and Reno talked about his village and his family. I listened to him. His voice was sweet and handsome. Stories of him as a child made me laugh but it was sweet. I wished I knew him when I was a human. The Rain started to die down I asked to go back and he followed me. When we reached the castle I heard the king laughed.
“I see Luna took you for a walk in the rain my boy,”
“It was nice we got to know each other,” I heard a smile.
I moved to his side and the drips echoed in the halls. I asked for dry clothes and cold water to wash my face. Reno stood outside and waited. When I was dressed I called Reno back in. I was about to wash my face. The wound heal the scars remained.
“Luna your eyes,” he gasped.
I turned around to face the window. Did he fear me now? Without a sound he was in front of me now. How did he do that?
“Luna I’m sorry. Your eyes are a beautiful colour,” he said touching my face.
I jolted back closing my eyes. I had to fight the thirst. My human part craved his touch. I wanted to be with him. But I couldn’t!
“I’m sorry were friends right?” He asked.
“Of course we are Reno,” I said.
I put the new blindfold on and place to old one by the window. I started to think of new words in my head for tonight. My songs were full of sadness or hate. But after two years Reno was the only one who heard it.
We walked down to dinner together. I talked about the village. Working and living, if only I could tell him the truth. But he would think of me as a monster. When we reached the dining hall I could hear the king talking about me.
“Ah good evening Luna,” said the king
“Good evening,” I bowed. I got on stage I begin to sing and dance.
I love you.
But I could not tell you.
You are my friend
You are my protector
That is the end.
When I came to say goodbye
I could help seeing
The pain in your eyes
I loved you now
I loved you then
I love you tomorrow
That’s the end
Moving to the vibration in my voice my feet move and people clapped. At the end I bowed and left the stage. Reno took my hand, “Luna who that about?” he asked
“No one just words in my mind,” I smiled.
How did he know? I wanted to tell him it was about him but I stopped myself. I couldn’t tell him. We walked for a while longer and he hear the sadness in his voice but he said he was fine and continued.
When we reached my room he opened the door. I entered and pulled my blindfold off. I heard Reno gasp a little but he said nothing. I rinsed my face and turned to face him, but he was one step ahead. He placed one hand on my face and the other traced the scars with his figures. My thirst was getting the better of me I had the will to fight it.
I wont. I wanted him and he wanted me. It was only few days since we met but I didn’t care. I embraced him and he did the same.
“Luna are you a vampire?” He asked
“Yes, I am” I said ashamed.
I sat him down and told him the truth, my real life and my real family. I only left out the thief part. He understood why I didn’t want him to touch me.
“I would never hurt you Reno please believe,” I was on my knees just like I was begging for my life. Then we heard knock at the door. I shot up and opened it.
“Where is it Luna?” asked the vile voiced king.
“Where is what king?” I played dumb as I walked over to the window. I could smell the revolting of werewolf. The fleabag moved around searching for the gold I stole to help Neko. He found nothing.
“Where is my gold?” he asked again.
I put my hand on ceil of the window. The darkness covered the land. Wait I saw something. A light? I faced the king, shapes and colours started to form. I pulled off my blindfold.
“Sister hurry up,” I heard the voice of my sister Reiru.
I looked down she looked like a young child in her white dress. I grabbed Reno’s hand and jumped out the window. Her powers have gotten stronger since the last time I saw her. We stopped at my hiding spot for the gold. Reno climbed off my back and I ran to embrace her.
“Reiru my sister,” I sobbed tearlessly.
“Luna I missed you so,” she held me close.
Reno flopped to the ground looking at the gold. He was handsome short brown hair and dark brown eyes. I walked over and put my hand on his face.
“Luna can you see me?” he asked.
I nodded and smiled. He grabbed me but the waist and twirled me in the air. But we couldn’t stay here the kings werewolves would be here soon.
“We have to go,” Reno put me down.
He pulled me in and kissed me. It happened to fast I forgot to close my eyes. I pulled away and took his hand. I turned to face Reiru and gasped. There was a witch with a dagger to her neck.
“I’m sorry Luna Twilight,” tears ran down the woman’s face. I knew her voice. I entered a flash back of darkness and nothing but voices. She was the lady with the kind voice.
“You were the one who was so kind to me,” I gasped.
Reno tackled the witch taking the dagger from her hand. But she saw a rock a hit him on the head the grabbed her dagger and stabbed him. I growled and grabbed the witch and ripped her neck apart. I ran to Reno side. Reiru couldn’t heal a witch’s blade was hard to heal. Blood dripped down from his month he whispered,
“I love you.”
It’s been more then a century since I thought of that day. The world has changed and I have changed. The gold I stole was enough for a huge house and a plot of land for Neko’s hospital. As the times changed Reiru and I found are soul mates. Well, mine never changed. That day Reno whispered he loved me I changed him. We are forever damned. We walk the world forever…Together.
