Chapter One-The Beginning of the End
A small, gentle breeze blew across the field of wildflowers, carrying with it hapless bees and other insects that had gotten caught in it.As it was springtime, the air was the perfect temperature, neither too cold nor too warm.Wild animals were also abound in this small mountain field, such as deer, geese,a few hedgehogs here and there, and the occasional pheasant that had wandered too far from its home.Suddenly,of the the deer,a buck, raised its majestic head and perked its ears at a seemingly far away sound that soon turned into a point blank grinding of servos and gears as a giant humanoid mech that was camouflaged with woodland colors came bounding from cover, taking four leaps before a single shot reverberated through the mountains and nearby forest.Using that as a sign,a massive, midnight black mass of the mechs appeared on the ridge line of the nearest mountain as they boosted down the terrain, some already unlimbering huge large caliber machine guns and rifles. Seemingly at the same time the shot rang out, another group of the mechs, these with a baby blue and crimson paint scheme, flew out of a small fjord that was nearby, its sparkling waters hiding over a dozen small submarines that were keeping a close eye on the entrance. If one were to have been there, they would have thought something similar to this-there went the neighborhood.
A few miles away,a small, full figured young woman was sprinting through the forest, dodging low lying branches and cobwebs that were in her path as she tried to escape...something.Running low on oxygen and her muscles already burning away more energy than she had,she tripped over a small rock around the size of an average man's fist.Hitting the ground and barking her knee against a fallen oak branch, she managed to roll to a seemingly safe position,a swift hand pulling a Colt .45 handgun from a holster attached to the small uniformed skirt she was wearing and trained it in front of her, waiting with bated breath on as to whether whatever had been chasing her would follow or choose another opportunity to attack.Suddenly,a small twig with a few pine needles still attached fell upon her head, causing her to look up into the face of what looked like a demon dog.Screaming aloud at the sight, she covered her head and dropped the pistol as the figure flipped onto its feet in front of her laughing."Well now, what kind of way is that for an officer in the Granscar army to act eh?"it asked in a silky accent, tightening a sword that was sheathed on its back seemingly out of practice than anything else.Looking up with a scowl on her face, the young woman stood up and took on a defensive stance as she shot a look that should have killed the figure at it."You know damn well that all I did was out of fear because of that blasted mask you wear into battle Leon,"she snapped, dusting off the bottom of her skirt to try and maintain some dignity."Why did you come after me anyway?I was visiting mother for the first time in ten years since SOMEONE can't seem to keep their promises."Laughing,Leon grabbed his side as he removed the mask, revealing the face of a handsome young man in his mid twenties,a neatly trimmed mustache and beard the color of coal partially covering up a crescent moon shaped scar that covered half his left side. That wasn't what marked him as being different though, not at all-it was his eyes, which changed color from an emerald green to a burnished gold as you looked at them."Sister,I told you why I couldn't keep that promise.Ever since I was promoted after the battle of London,I've been so busy I can't even think for myself at all." All this said as he hopped onto his hands and began to do push ups."Showoff...well that isn't a good enough reason for Christ's sake! Your a bloody Sergeant of the Sword now,so you can pretty much do whatever you want!" Rolling her eyes, the woman slowly sat down cross legged and shot a nasty look at Leon, the sighed."I guess it is for the best though...if mother knew what I was doing she would do everything in her power to get me transferred back here."That's when the pair heard the gunshot and looked at each other."s**t..." Taking off in the direction that the field headquarters would be,Leon snatched up the woman as he passed her, silencing her rebuttal with a look that said he would brook no nonsense.
Around ten minutes passed after the first shot before the pair made it to the massed tents and hastily built buildings that represented the Granscar field operations station,Leon finally let her down as he walked toward the main tent where a overweight officer with a pair of field glasses was observing the battle."Grand General Curschek,Sergeant of the Sword Leon Frederick Olson reporting."Standing at attention, the young man placed a fist across his chest and bowed to the General,a look of rapt respect upon his face as his sister finally made it into the tent."Oh!General!"she cried out, running up to the man and embracing him warmly as he looked toward the sound of her voice with a genuinely joy filled smile."Kathy! I thought that you were out among the fight, which had me worried half to death till scouts said they had found your Variable."Motioning her to take the glasses as Leon looked on with a look of pure shook across his face,Kathy looked across the field and winced. "How did Alexandria get that many Lancers through the border without alerting our forces?"she asked in an owed voice, her hands visibly shaking as she held the field glasses to her eyes."That,my old friend...is something we have yet to figure out,"Curschek said in a doleful voice, sweat rolling off his obscenely fat forehead as he coughed a bit."But if we don't get reinforcements soon,we're going to lose."
