Chapter 1. Lost in Traffic.

September 7, Present day. Sunday. 2:23 PM.

Stopping to stare at Mrs. Chaufer's beautiful rose garden, Emma leaned in closer and closed her eyes as if to hear it's faint whispers.
The smell of morning dew, soft silky petals brushing her slightly; she loved it all. She leaned back to admire all of them and smiled. "You can practically hear them gushing!" said Mrs. Chaufer, walking in on Emma's adoring performance. Blushing slightly, Emma brushed the dirt off her work jeans and went to greet her. "Hello, Mrs. Chaufer, how are you this evening?" Emma said. "Fine fine, still not getting any younger." Mrs. Chaufer began, "but I see at least you're enjoying youth. Not like my grandchildren, with their computers and their video games." She said, laughing slightly. Emma gave her an understanding smile. Mrs. Chaufer handed her a 10 dollar bill and left her to the garden. Emma smiled at her earnings, it had been weeks since she had an allowance, she found it easier to do her neighbors garden's then to depend on her mother. Due to their economic situation, she felt too guilty to ask.

Emma shoved her money into one pocket and her work gloves smothered with dirt in the other. I need new pants. She though.
Her eyes glazed past the rushing traffic while she waited for the red light to cross the street. Sometimes she felt like she was in an island and the cars were all sharks, she always thought it would help her avoid an accident. The red light appeared and the cars stopped, one foot next to the other looking down at the concrete pavement sometimes to look for ants.

About a quarter of a mile away four high school students who were heading to a party in a red convertible waved around beer cans while the girls in the back flailed their arms back and forth. The boy who drove, who looked about 16, laughed and reached around to the girl behind him and kissed her, letting go of his seat belt. Turning around he saw a young girl, about 14, right in front of him; about to crash into his fathers brand new car. There was really no time to think, he was going 70 miles per hour and she was just like a paper bag in rushing traffic. No more than 5 seconds passed by, a deep darkness overwhelmed her. The numbness she felt was contrasted by the blinding light that reached her eyes, forcing them closed. Slowly she stood, extreme calmness that could not be compared to anything or explained filled her.
