Tanya was attacked by her friends Monday at school.

“Omigodomigodomigod!” they both squealed.

“What happened?” Ashley asked.

“Did you kiss?” Sara pressed.

As Tanya tried to dodge the incessant questions, Kan came up behind her.

“Good morning, Tanya,” he said.

Tanya turned around to face him while her friends' eyes widened and they left quickly. Tanya turned back around to see where they had gone. They had disappeared.

“Thanks for that,” she said with a relieved sigh.

Kan smiled and laughed low in his throat. “No problem, always happy to scare off friends with annoying questions."

“Not annoying, just…questions I don’t care to answer right now,” Tanya contradicted.

They walked on in silence for a while before Tanya felt obliged to break it.

“What class do you have now?” she inquired.

“Psychology,” he told her. “You?”

Tanya pulled a face. “U.S. history.”

Kan laughed. “You have Rescoe?”

“Yes.”

“Good luck learning anything, and good luck passing.”

Tanya just grunted noncommittally

Kan fell silent for a moment.

“Did you really have fun on Friday?” he asked quietly.

Tanya looked at him, then took his hand and leaned against his shoulder.

“Yes,” she said simply.

They walked to the hallway where both of their classes were.

“The bell’s going to ring,” Tanya said. “I’ll talk to you later.” She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek before darting into her classroom.

Kan stood staring at the door for a moment, much like outside the library. He was brought back to Earth when the bell rang, and he sprinted into his class next door.


Tanya set her books down and laid her head on her desk. Did I seriously just do that? She wondered giddily. I did, didn't I?

She went through the class in a bit of a daze, somewhat shocked by her actions, her brain registered in the outside world just enough to scribble a few notes on a page and look a few points up in her textbook. It barely registered in her mind when Mr. Rescoe left the room momentarily to talk to the school principal.

He came back in, followed by a small, waif-like girl with wispy platinum blond hair and large cerulean eyes. But despite those fragile looks, the way she carried herself spoke of a no nonsense attitude.

Mr. Rescoe cleared his throat. “Class,” he began.

Some of the students started shushing the rest of the class and a few of the more obnoxious ones deigned to yell the occasional “Shut up!”

Mr. Rescoe looked at the girl.

“I'm Phoebe Howel,” she said in a surprisingly strong voice that held a slight accent, “I'm from Sydney, Australia and I'm a junior in high school.” She smiled and looked at the teacher.

“Ok, we'll put you over here by Kelli,” he said. Kelli stuck her hand in the air and waved it energetically. Phoebe sat down in the seat next to her and eyed her warily. Tanya returned to her daydream, blithely unaware of the new girl's eyes on her.


Did Tanya really just...kiss me? Kan was astounded. She did, didn't she? Why...how...oh screw it. Kan decided not to question it and just be happy.

Kan was pulled from his blissful reverie by a slight chill in the room.

Dragon. He thought.

He looked up sharply and saw the student beside the teacher he had for psychology, Mrs. Leyena. She had hair like fire and hard eyes the color of emeralds, the same eyes he himself had. The hard, clear eyes of a creature of darkness. Those eyes were staring at him, boring into him as though they could see into his soul. Kan glared back.

“This is Angelica…Keroi? Did I get that right dear?” Mrs. Leyena began in her chirpy voice.

Angelica nodded.

“And she will be joining us for psychology. She’s from Samara, Russia? Is that correct?”

Again, Angelica simply nodded.

“And she’s only a sophomore, so make her welcome!”

A few of the seniors glared at the new student. In their minds, overachieving munchkins should be annihilated. She glanced coolly at the rest of the class then took an empty seat near Kan.

Kan stayed outwardly collected, but inside, his mind was reeling. Keroi was a very well known dragon clan among the non-human population. The clan had nearly wiped out the entire vampire race in a vicious war. But that was 500 years ago, when dragons were larger, stronger, and more deadly. Who knew how they fought nowadays?

“Keroi, huh?” he inquired at the girl.

She just nodded again and stared at the marker board at the front of the room.
“You never were much a group for talking, were you?” Kan leaned back in his seat and laced his fingers behind his head.

Angelica glared at him.

“Now what could be so important that the Kerois felt they had to send their pride and joy daughter here?” he speculated aloud.

Angelica whipped around in her desk to face Kan, her eyes blazing with the fire that lurked behind them.

Kan let his face show a flicker of fear. Let them think I’m actually afraid. He thought mockingly. They can learn later I no longer possess any fear of fire.

Kan shook himself slightly. That was a closed door for him. No use opening it and freeing old demons.

He followed the example Angelica set, and faced the front of the classroom.

It couldn’t have anything to do with Tanya, could it?
