Lords of Shadow: Part VI
“No, it’s just, never mind.” Tanya got up to leave.

“Wait, Tanya, we just wanna know why,” Sarah protested.

“We’re not trying to be rude,” Ashley told her.

“Well it sure sounds like you are,” Tanya snapped at them. She left the lunch room.

Kan found her at her locker, her head bent and her hand resting on the door. He came up beside her and put a hand on her shoulder. “You ok?” he asked.

Tanya slammed her locker shut and whirled around to face him, pasting a smile on her face. “Yeah, why do you ask?”

Kan bent to pick up a few papers she had accidentally dropped on the ground. He studied the drawings for a moment before Tanya snatched them back.

“They’re just ideas,” she said, hastily stuffing them in a notebook.

“Let me see them,” Kan told her. They had caught his attention in the brief moment he’d held them.

Tanya shook her head. “Just random ideas, I’m not planning on using them.”

Kan held his hand out and gestured that she hand them over.

Tanya met his eyes squarely, but soon gave in with a sigh. She fished the drawings out of her notebook and placed them in his waiting hand.

Kan studied each of the drawings scrupulously. They were designs for dresses. Mostly just sketches, a few details here and there, but one was done with amazing, fine detail.

“You took care with this one,” he commented.

Tanya glanced at the one he was holding and looked at her feet, blushing.

It was a dress styled from various other types of dresses. It had wide hoop skirts and a low cut bodice, with ruffles and corseting, some people might call it “goth”. There was a list of colors and accent colors underneath it. Black and white, yellow and green, light and dark blue and purple, and red and black.

Kan whistled.

“You should actually make this,” he said.

Tanya blushed an even darker shade of pink and scuffed the floor with her toe.
“It's not that good,” she protested.

Kan lifted her chin and caught her cerulean gaze with his own emerald one.
“Yes it is,” he told her firmly.

Tanya bit her lip then tugged at the papers in Kan's hand, he gave them to her.

“I might know a guy if you ever want to get that made,” he said quietly.

Tanya smiled. “I don't think that will ever be necessary,” she replied.

Kan simply looked at her for a moment before quickly wrapping his arm around
her waist and pulling her close to him. She turned her head into his shoulder when he lowered his face to hers.

“I do think so,” he whispered into her ear. “You have a talent, don't hide it.”

Tanya looked up at him with an almost fearful expression on her face. She could feel how fast he was when he pulled her close, and his strength as he held her there. Kan relinquished his hold on her with a mumbled apology when her alarm registered in his mind.

“Do you really think so?” she asked timidly.

Kan brushed her hair away from her neck and looked thoughtful. “Yes.”

She looked down at the drawings in her hand and slid them back into her notebook, as though they would come to life and attack.

“So what was wrong earlier?” Kan inquired.

Tanya looked baffled for a moment. “Oh, that,” she finally said. “It’s nothing, just…never mind, don’t worry about it.” She smiled at him and shrugged her shoulders.

He frowned, but let it drop.

“So what are you doing tonight?” Tanya asked after a moment of silence.

Kan shrugged. “Probably homework. Why?”

Tanya shuffled awkwardly. “My parents want to invite you over for dinner,” she mumbled.

Kan raised his eyebrows. “Really?”

Tanya nodded. “I told them I had a date last night and they freaked, I could barely get out of the house when you came,” she told him.

Kan laughed. “I think I can make it over, what time?”

Tanya looked up at him. “Are you sure?” she asked.

“Yeah, what time?” Kan repeated.

“Six,” Tanya replied. “I warn you, though, they’re crazy.”

Kan smiled almost devilishly. “I’ll bet I can out-crazy them both,” he said.

The bell rang, signifying the end of the lunch and students streamed from the
lunchroom and classrooms where many classes were still going on. The second lunch period started as students from the first lunch went to their lockers and classes.

“I have chorus now,” Tanya said.

“I’ll see you later, then,” Kan told her.

Tanya waved a hand and was swallowed up by the waves of students surging through the halls.
