My Life
Prom 2009
Prom 2009: A Student's Perspective

As my last year being a High School Senior comes to a close, there are several memories I wish to take with me from my cumulative experience. Memories such as the simple but unforgettable moments with my friends, my hardships, and my struggles. However, I would also like to take some endearing notion of having had been a 'simple' teenager as well; thus, I decided to go to Prom. Prom is one of those events that often time calls for dramatic over-the-top attire, which is something that I am personally not familiar with. Regardless, for this festivity, I went in my Sunday best and attempted to enjoy myself. The reasons for me going to this exaggerated occasion were a combination of a promise to a my dear friend, Monique, the realization that it would be my last chance to attend one of these events, and more importantly, the lack of anything to do that Saturday night.

To my surprise, the party was enjoyable, of course, disregarding the incredible pretentiousness of some of the people that were there, who sported off accessories and wares that probably cost their parents their bi-weekly salary. Regardless, I have only fond memories of this night. Although many people didn't attend the festivity, the number that did was just right. Students of all cultures and ethnicities danced their hearts away to the music of their choosing. Unlike other DJs, this one actually had variety. I have to commend the sponsors this year on an incredible DJ; he was great.

Also, I was happy to see that the Senior King and Queen for the Prom of 2009 were no other than Joshua Battard and Yesenia Sangabriel. This unlikely couple summed up how the evening played out---fun and out of the ordinary (for me at least). Hooting and hollering have indeed busted my already damaged eardrums, but it was worth it. I can honestly say that I have been enlightened through my own skepticism and now wish to have attended these kind of events earlier during my High School career. Maybe that's where I made my mistake, I consider my high school years a career rather than just crucial years in my development. As I reminisce on last night, I laugh at a realization that it took me four long years to finally 'let loose' and enjoy the present time.

This might seem like a critique piece, and in numerous ways it is, however, it is also a reminder of my last prom, which was in fact 'something to remember'.
