Some people call them wonderful. Some call them beautiful. Others go so far to call them magical. But in reality, let's face it - above all else, they're AWKWARD.

Now that we've cleared that up, it's story time! This is not my story (thankfully), but one that a friend of mine told me the other day, that I thought was too brilliant to keep to myself.

So. Once upon a time, there was a girl. And a boy. Could I make it any more obvious what's about to happen next? Well, just in case I could, I'll tell you the rest.

Boy likes girl. Girl doesn't know boy exists. Boy plucks up courage to ask girl out (after a year of hiding his crush on her). Girl declines. Boy tries again later. Girl declines. Boy tries again later. Girl declines. Boy tries again later. Girl declines, but goes out with Boy's best friend.

By now we're feeling pretty sorry for Boy.

But then suddenly, Girl and Boy do end up going on a date. And both of them have a blast. They totally hit it off. They're practically soul mates. They go out for a time, and fall horribly into sticky, gooey, skittles flavored love.

But what's this? There's trouble in paradise! Boy has not yet kissed Girl, though by now he's dying to. But every time an opportunity to do so comes up, something happens, or he just chickens out. ):

Then one day, Boy and Girl are sitting on a bench in a garden. Very romantic stuff, no? And a sort of magical strike of courage hits Boy. No, it doesn't just hit him. It whacks into him. It slaps him across the face and breaks his nose. It fills his heart, his soul, his lungs. Luckily there's a lot of oxygen in courage so he can still breathe.

Boy suddenly turns to girl. The look on his face obviously conveys EXACTLY what it is he wants to do. And she is not reluctant in any way, because she's been waiting for this kiss for a while. Boy cocks his head to one side. He closes his eyes, and he leans in for the kiss. Girl does the same thing. And this might have resulted in the earth shattering, mind blowing, hallelujah chorus worthy kiss Boy was after were it not for two small things.

1)A combination of nerves and excitement meant that they both threw themselves just a tad too enthusiastically at one another.

2)They cocked their heads to the same side.

CRASH.

Half dazed, Boy pulls away from Girl, rubbing his head, and realizes she is bleeding all over his shirt. He's given her a bloody nose. And now he can't get apologies out fast enough. For the next hour or so he hovers over her while she waits for the flow of blood to stop. Which, eventually, it does. Yay!

But no, not yay. Boy is humiliated. And so apologetic, that eventually Girl get tired of hearing him say sorry. "Look," she says. "You owe me one."

"Yes, of course, if there's any way I could make it up to you-"

"Well, there is. Kiss me, you clumsy idiot."

Boy hesitates, then does so. And the result is the sweetest, most incredible kiss in the history of the world.

So yes. First kisses. Good stuff, man. Ridiculous, embarrassing, awkward beyond comparison, and even bloody, but at the end of the day, they're kind of worth it, huh?

(that's your cue to go "awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" wink
