DEMOX: ch. 41
Chapter 41: The Hierarchy

We followed the fairy the best we could. The vegetation became denser and denser the deeper we penetrated the forest. Olivia would stop and wait for us to catch up every once in a while. She was much more agile and flexible than. Not to mention smaller, and the fact that she could fly. “Hurry up, slowpokes!” she teased.

“You know, if you weren’t living here I’d have hacked my way through here,” I told her.

“Well thanks for the consideration, Dyron!” she replied with sarcasm. “We’re almost there anyways!”

My girls, however, were past that considerate stage. They snapped off twigs, broke off branches, and kicked stuff out of the way mumbling obscenities all the while. “We’d better be close! I can’t take this!” Star said angrily.

“Seriously Dyron, this is just too much to be going through! But it’s a worthless argument since we are getting help that we really needed and didn’t have to given to us,” Ashley whispered.

“We’re here!” Olivia announced. The three of us looked at the fairy as if she’d grown an extra head. We were standing in front of an impenetrable wall of trees and entangled vines.

Out of nowhere, Ashley suddenly snatched me down to the ground by my collar. Before I could inquire why, a blazing heat rushed above our heads! It was Star’s doing and the fire hit enveloped tiny Olivia! “What the ******** are you doing?!” I shouted at her. Star didn’t answer me. She just stopped and said ever so casually, “Baby! Calm down!”

Was my girlfriend finally fed up with Olivia to point that she planned to kill her? No. I wouldn’t believe that. And just like that, my doubts were laid to rest as Olivia’s own giggles forced me to lift myself and witness the fire that danced around her! She had become a part of it. She had become one with the fire, if you will. You could literally see the fire in her eyes. “Is this so surprising, young Moracian? Fire is a vital part of our world, and therefore, we have tamed it, like you Demox. As you can see, us fairies can do this on a much deeper level than you, being beings of a magical and natural existence. Star knew that fairies were the true Demox, and we, mere imitations. Even Star herself.

Olivia then turned to the obstacle that blocked our path and focused the fire into her finger. It was a little glowing ball of orange, red, yellow, and white. She simply touched the root of a tree and the fire spread through the wall, burning it down. A circular doorway now stood before us! “I welcome you…to the Fairy Kingdom!”

The spectacle that lay before us simple Moracians was absolutely astounding! A miniature city, built by these miniscule creatures! It reminded me of when we saw Vermendis. The little winged beings zipped back and forth, carrying out the respective jobs and tasks they’d been assigned.

“Dude, this place kicks a**!” I said.

“It’s sooo cute!” Star cooed.

Ashley on the other hand was just speechless. “This is the ‘capital’ if you will.” Olivia began to explain. “This is where all final decisions for the good of the forest are made by the queen.” Getting to the palace was tricky business. The three of us had to be careful not to step on anything. Or anyone for that matter!

This was most definitely easier said than done! We were giants compared to the fairies. But eventually, we made it to a clearing that contained a moss covered stone structure about twice my height. It certainly had all the qualifications of royal dwellings. I also noticed that for a building of its size, the six windows on it were awfully large. “Why are the windows so big?” I asked.

Olivia explained, “The windows are actually seats for the higher-ups. The larger ones are for the Fairy Queen, High Pixie, and High Nymph. The three below them are for their underlings. I sit in the seat under the Fairy Queen, because I am the High Fairy. No one is higher than Her Majesty!”

“This is true, High Fairy, Olivia! But apparently you think yourself high enough to bring humans into our midst!” a voice echoed from the top center. It was also the largest one. Knowing that, I had a hunch as to who the voice belonged to.
