Chapter 42: The Agreement
Olivia turned quickly to see that in her proper place, there stood the queen! She was in a flowing gown of many colors. He wings were much larger than any other fairy and much more beautiful. Like her gown, her wings were patterned with a wide spectrum of colors and resembled giant butterfly wings the shimmered in the firelight that surrounded us.
“U-Uh…Your Highness! How does the evening find you?” she stuttered and quickly curtsied.
“I am well. But it seems you are not! You make friends with the thieves of Moracius! Does that sound well?” the queen snapped. Her words certainly got the girls riled up.
“Thieves?! We are not thieves!!” Star lashed out.
“Yeah, we didn’t steal a damn thing from this forest!” Ashley retorted.
I whipped around and whispered, “Both of you stop it! Do not incur the wrath of the Fairy Queen! Do you understand me?” They both made smart comment but with another angry look, the reluctantly backed down.
There was an awkward silence. Finally, Olivia bowed again, her black hair cascading over her shoulders and began to explain the ordeal. The queen listened intently as she hovered as if sitting on a chair, legs crossed and arms folded across her chest. Every few seconds, she would gently flap her delicate butterfly wings. Once Olivia finished, the queen said nothing for a moment, then stopped hovering altogether. She stood in place, flipped her long blonde hair, and said, “I see.”
What did that mean. I shifted my eyes to the High Fairy who was just as confused as us. “So…Your Majesty, if I may,” I began with a bow. She looked down at me and nodded. “As you can see, we’re Demox. The three of us are just lost and traveling through your lands is quite a task. Is there any way you could assist us…please?”
The girls couldn’t stand to see me beg. I myself, did not consider it begging. If it were begging, I wouldn’t have done it. Still, they remained quiet as their eyes were fixed on the queen.
“I have decided to help you, despite my opinion of your race. I must realize that you are only victims of your ancestors’ choices, and that not all of you mean to harm us. But here is one thing I demand in return!” she told us.
“What would that be?” Ashley asked.
“Never speak of this meeting! You saw nothing of us. Tell a living soul about the existence of Fairies and you will suffer terribly!” she warned. While she spoke, my hair stood up all over. There was a cold breeze that was no nowhere near natural. Seeing that the warning was heard, both Olivia and the queen smiled.
“You see that we are serious, don’t you? We as a “mythical” race must stay that way. Mythical. You’d only hurting yourselves in the end with your greed. This is your nature, to manipulate and control, and own the very things you shouldn’t have. You’ve done it before…Thieves of Moracius,” Olivia spoke in ominous tone.
Star could not hold her tongue any longer. Not when she realized something. “You call us thieves. Is it because Fairies were the original Demox’?”
“Sharp tongue and mind! Excellent deduction, my young Vermendian! This land was widely ruled by the creatures you call mythical. Fairies, Nymphs, Pixies, and so on. We gave you power out of pity! The demons were picking you off like fruit! You got greedy though. You began to drain us of the power we bestowed on you and take us for granted. So we stopped and left you to fend for yourselves. You turned out to be quite a resourceful group of people didn’t you?” she explained.
“How’d you know that Star’s a Vermendian?” I wondered.
“The girl only wears decorative jewelry. The Lost race does not need to use magic enhancers unlike this new generation of Moracius,” Olivia answered pointing to Ashley.
After that, we got back to the matter at hand. Getting out of here. We found out from the Fairies that a special barrier that “shifts” the position of the forest surrounds this forest. It would be easier to explain it as a rotation. “Every cycle of the sky” or every day, is how often the shift occurs. It shifted clockwise twice, then counter-clockwise once. That’s three days right there. That is why it took us that long to realize our plight. “Olivia, I will entrust you the task of guiding them through the forest. You brought them here, and you will take them out,” the queen ordered. Without a word, Olivia curtsied subserviently and turned to us.
“As our guests, you will spend the night here. We depart in the morning,” she told us.
