Cosmos worked towards creating ablations of herself so as to spread her influence so that it may benefit her future scheme. As the Heartless grew in numbers, one such ablation of her work as Faeryn Ania, a being shaped from pity, sculpted from empathy, and sealed with apathy. Her purpose was to find servants of partial heart so that they may assist the protagonist of light in his or her need of an ally.
A question arises: Precisely what is a partial heart?
With a partial heart, they would retain their memories and persona, but by lacking the other crucial portion, they could not love, or hate, or allow their soul to develop. Prejudices would never be lost, new pespectives of live could not be gained, and the lessons of love and hatred are forever lost on the Half-Hearted.
Such servants had been snatched to safety from the brink of total consumption, and thus they would owe a debt of their devotion to Ania. Lacking half of their heart, which also held dreams and purpose, it was often for the servant's best interest to follow along and agree to doing the various tasks assigned to it.
It is the price of their existence's continuation, no matter how shallow compared to that of genuine and wholesome heart. They continue to exist so long as the Faeryn believes in them. The Half-Hearted are best described as indentured servants.
The only way in which a Half-Hearted may be freed from her ('her', for Faeryn Ania rarely salvages hearts of lads) condition of servitude without disappearing forever due to Ania's willful rejection would be to restore her heart to its original state.
It seems a task of the impossible, for that portion of heart had been devoured by shadow's maw. However, rumor goes that anything that was fully destroyed can be retrieved and re-bound from the endless depths of Chaos' chamber.
