PROLOGUE
"Poor girl." "Poor girl? She's a disgrace." "It's war, what do you expect?" "She wasn't strong enough. Shame." "Pressure's too hard to take for children." "Ending it for her was best, I suppose?" "But we needed her." "I know." The adults argued among themselves, standing frigid in the snow. One of the men prodded the limp, half buried body with his massive foot, slightly larger than the young girl's own head. They rolled her over onto her back and confiscated the gun she dropped. Frozen blood pooled around her bullet wound, her green eyes closed, almost a sickening serenity to them. "What will we do now?" a woman asked. "Nothing we can do." "There has to be-" One of the men held his hand up mid sentence, silencing her. "It was easier with her alive, but now all we can do is wait." The woman looked down in disappointment. This would take even more work. Some of the men began wrapping the body in bloodied rages, preparing it for the trip back to base. As the woman watched sadly, she conjured up as many ideas for fixing the situation. Could the body be brought back? Could the conscience be repaired? The brain mended? None of the solutions were easy enough. Then, she supposed none of them would be in the first place. "Sir," the woman said suddenly, brainstorming. "We could always just..." He nodded before she finished. "It's the quickest, I suppose." The woman nodded. She knew that, being the scientist of them, this situation was hers to solve now. "Looks like i won't be sleeping tonight..."
CHAPTER 1
"Hurry up, you idiot! We're gonna be late!" Rin shouted behind her to her brother. "I can't help it! Sleeping is awesome!" he shouted back, running after her down the road. "Oh, I'm so gonna kill you later!" she breathed. On the first day after break, as well. Wonderful. Today was rather beautiful. The first day right after spring break, and the cherry blossoms flanking he main road were blooming beautifully. nothing could ruin this day. Except for her, of course. The reached the front school gates in a matter of minutes, panting heavily. What a great first impact. "Hurry hurry hurry..." Rin said, shoving passed the gates and front doors, Len following her up every hallway and flight of stairs. They reached homeroom shortly, on the 2nd floor. Students were clustered in separate groups around the desks, rejoining each and every little clique and posse. One of which, sadly, Rin was not a part of. Disappointingly, as any other day, she moved over to her favorite seat in the back, next to the 2nd to last window. Len went to rejoin his "boy band wagon", as usual. Rin, not knowing what else there was to do, simply sat there, staring idly at the blossoming cherry trees beneath them in the courtyard. So much for being so excited for the first day of school, seeing as it evidently was just the same as any other lonely day. She secretly wished that her and Len would... hang out more, as they used to. "It was nice back then, huh..." she sighed. Her breath caught in her throat. 'Back then'? There was never a back then. It's always been like this. Why would she think 'back then'...? Interrupting her thoughts came the burst of the front class doors and the high pitched "adoring" wail of a girl. Ah, there she was. Hatsune Miku. School vice president, idol, and cheerleader captain. What could possibly go wrong with such a nobody like Rin? She happily entered the classroom as always, followed by her same posse as always, with that weird, annoying tone of hers. As always. "Welcome back to school, everybody~!" she cheered. "Boy, spring breaks over, what a bummer~!" Rin clicked her tongue in annoyance. "As if being back is a big deal..." she growled under her breath. Students began to causally pool around her, overflowing with laughs and smiles. She guessed the topic was how "adorable" Miku and her boyfriend Kaito looked, as she heard the words "cute", "perfect", and "couple" multiple times. The teacher entered the class with a calm smile on her face, generally calming and seating everyone. "Okay okay, settle down, everyone. Welcome back to school. I know it was hard to wake up, but do your best today. Now then..." Miku and her girl gang began to giggle, which of course went unpunished because the teachers were suckers for her. it was honestly very annoying. Though, deep down, it pained Rin to say, but she was very much jealous of Miku. Who wouldn't be? Fame, popularity, friends, a relationship, happiness. Even Len mentioned her quite a few times in their conversations, which led Rin to believe the fact that even her dim-witted brother liked her, possibly loved her.
