Prologue : The Bride
"Today's the day." "Yeah, it is." He gave her the smile she had always known... and hated. The hollow one.The one filled with expectations for her. The one that didn't care about her, but she could read it perfectly. This is what you were raised for, it said. Today proves your purpose. "So," the father continued, "what is your purpose?" She adjusted the neck bow of her school uniform... or, her future one, rather. Her former school would be nothing but a wisp of memory starting today. "To keep the vampires in line," she answered, "to satisfy them. Nothing more." "What have you done up to this day?" "I've been raised perfectly. The quality of my blood, my offering, perfected." she responded instantly, rehearsal paying off. She pulled the overcoat of the school uniform over herself. "What are you?" "A bloodwell, nothing more than a bride for the sons of the queen." He had instructed her to say that. To call the woman he once loved "a queen." He looked her over as she turned around in fool uniform, belongings packed. Not as a father would look at a daughter whom he loved; with love, concern, and faith in her capabilities. That she would be okay. No, the gaze was cold. Expectant. More like a master, looking over a prized lamb that he would enter in a contest. One that would cost or win him everything. But she was used to it, and she took it as a compliment. It is all she had known for 15 years. From the moment she was born, he has had that look, the expectancy. What more could she want from her own father than pride? She couldn't answer with "love." She had no idea what that was like. "You'll make the perfect gift to her," he nodded, "and what is your name, my child?" She blinked, indifferent to the question. She often asked it herself. "Kirasaki Setsuna."
Setsuna waited in the foyer of the mansion she'd lived in her whole life. Regardless, now it was so unfamiliar. It wasn't a home, really. It was more of a training ground. A temporary confinement. Her mother sat across from her on the opposite couch, sipping her Earl Grey. "You will not mess up. You will please her and her sons. Then maybe you will be allowed to live," she instructed. Setsuna nodded, slightly neutral on the whole idea of pleasing the vampires. Her mother just wanted their mother to be satisfied, to leave her alone. To leave her husband alone. He had been in love with Cordelia, the vampire "queen," he called her, first, but she had not returned the feelings. Still in love with Cordelia, even after he married Setsuna's mother, he promised her his first born daughter, as a final statement for his desire to please her. Though Setsuna was her legitimate daughter, her mother never rose her as such. She saw her as a nuisance, a bargain, as the last tie her husband had with the vampires, with the Sakamaki family. Because of it, she wanted her gone as soon as possible. Well, Setsuna thought, she won't have to wait much longer.
She admired the large courtyard in the front of the mansion. It was spacious, and she liked the way the heels of her shoes echoed off the bricks. It was quiet here, serene. The water from the fountain in the center of the clearing made a pleasant fall, almost like white noise. Ravens perched on trees surrounding the courtyard eyed her, curious. It was ominous, but interesting. Especially as a new home. She knocked on the mahogany doors, emitting an eerie echo. Before anyone could have humanly come to the door to answer, it creaked open, revealing a slice of darkness on the inside. With a last glance at the black car she was brought here in as it pulled away, she took a breath, not out of hesitancy but out of preparation for her new life, and stepped inside.
Chapter 1 : RedRidingHood and the Wolf Pack Yui
Yui glanced impatiently at the clock grandfather clock, swaying indifferently in the corner of the reception room. 11:53, it read. She fiddled with her curly blonde hair nervously. A guest will be arriving today, the guys had described it. A permanent one. Would it be another vampire? She hoped not, Like she didn't have enough to deal with, living in a house with six of them. The Sakamaki brothers, all blood thirsty vampires in human forms. All wanting her blood, and coming very close to killing her for it. But since the recent incident, things have dulled down slightly, to a point where it was more manageable to survive. They seemed to calm down over the last month, but that didn't excuse her from being frequently teased and harassed. Not to mention she couldn't do anything about it. The proof of their new found behavior was the silence in the reception room, save the tick-tock of the clock. The golden-blonde 19-year-old, Shuu, the oldest of the house and Beatrix's first son, was sprawled out on the couch opposite of her, silent, immersed in his headphones. He was naturally silent, mainly because most of his time he was truthfully asleep, but even he had a more peaceful aura about him. Reiji, 18 years, the second oldest brother, sat in a single chair to her right, reading a book. Though he had black hair and red eyes, opposite of Shuu's blue, they were blood related siblings, Reiji being the younger of the two. Surprisingly, he was much more refined. From a different mother, but same father, there was Laito, Cordelia's oldest son at 17. He sat at the far end of the couch where Yui sat. His green eyes flicked to her teasingly as she looked at him, causing her to look away again. He chuckled and adjusted the black fedora atop his wavy red-brown hair. Kanato, his younger brother by a day, sat in his own chair at the far end of the reception room, whispering to the teddy bear he frequently had with him, Teddy. He had the most resemblance to his mother; wavy light purple hair and sleepy, yet rather playful purple eyes to match. He was rather childish for a 17 year old, preferring his toys over other company, but sadistic all the same. Then there was Ayato, who sat in the third chair next to him, surprisingly younger by a day, though at first glance you would never notice. He sat there looking irritated and bored. But the redhead was silent after his barrage of questions at Reiji, asking why they were there and who the guest was, to which Reiji just replied be patient. The youngest son at 16, and Christa's only son, was Subaru. He had strikingly white hair, a trait from his mother, and red eyes staring intently out the window next to his place leaning against the far wall. Yui sighed internally, hoping the guest would not be another vampire. But then again, maybe it would be another bride, like her. Another sacrifice, she thought. Not wanting to be thought of as such, she dubbed herself a bride instead. "Oh, she's here." Subaru said, breaking the silence after a few moments. Reiji clapped his book shut and stood up, straightening his vest. "Let her in," he said to no one in particular. With their strange connection to the mansion, Yui imagined the doors in the foyer opening by themselves. Laito chuckled, standing up and stretching. "Ahah, so it was a 'her.' I was suspecting it would be somebody troublesome, like another vampire or something, thank goodness." Yui stood as well as everyone, save Shuu and Subaru, prepared to go greet the girl. So it was a girl... another bride. She looked to Ayato as he stood and prepared to leave. Through some unspoken yet unanimous decision among the household, Yui was Ayato's bride. Of course, that didn't stop the others from constantly harassing her, and it just gave Ayato more reason to do so as well. "Um, Ayato..." she began, speaking slowly and thinking of her next words carefully. It was hard to determine what would set a vampire into a rage and what wouldn't, so care was always required. Most of the time, she refrained from talking altogether, but lately it has been getting easier and easier to communicate. "What, chichinashi?" he asked as they walked out of the reception room into the hallway. Ignoring his insult to her breast size, since he called her chichinashi, or flat chested, or some other variation all the time, she continued. "Who is the new girl that's coming?" He smirked at her. "Wouldn't you like to know, eh? She's another sacrificial bride, like you. She was promised to the household by some old lover of my mother's, or something." Yui frowned. To be promised to the household is how it always happened. She wondered if she could ever explain how urgent it was that the girl leaves before the brothers got to her. "And also," Ayato continued unexpectedly, "apparently there's something special about her. And we're not allowed to kill her, either." They all reached the foyer, which was rather dark and dimly lit by the blueish light of the overhead chandelier, and waiting there was a young girl. She seemed Yui's age, already wearing their school uniform, with long brown hair and blue eyes. Surprisingly she seemed rather carefree, leaning back on her heels and looking around the room in awe. As her eyes fell upon them, her expression only brightened. "Oh, hello! You're the Sakamaki brothers, right?" she greeted happily. Yui stared at her, slightly worried and concerned. Reiji spoke up first, and with a sigh. "Yes, that's correct, and I was hoping your arrival wouldn't have been on such short notice." She laughed a little. "Ah, yeah, well," she said with refreshing optimism, "sorry about that. I had no idea my time was so near either." Her time? Yui thought, so she knew about being a bride? Laito, with inhuman speed, materialized next to the girl, though she seemed unfazed. "Well then, b***h-chan, welcome to your new home," he said with a chuckle. "Er, my name's not b***h-chan. It's Kirasaki Setsuna." Kanato did the same on her other side, and still her expression was calm. "Hey, you won't be mean to me, will you, Setsuna? Especially if I ever need a snack?" he asked in a rather childish tone. "Well, I it's my job, isn't it? I wouldn't do that anyway," she replied. He seemed pleased with her answer as he smiled. "Well then, we'll have your bags taken up to your room. During then, please come to the reception room for tea." Reiji said, adjusting his glasses. Setsuna smiled and obliged.
She explained how she was promised to the Sakamaki family by her father, and it surprised Yui how calmly she seemed about the whole situation. She wondered how she would have been, had she known of her own fate as well. While the others were busy discussing other things, she turned to Setsuna. "H-Hi, I'm Komori Yui..." she said cautiously. To her relief, she smiled back. "Nice to meet you, Yui." It almost seemed surreal to be socializing with another girl who didn't hate her at school for "hogging the popular Sakamaki boys." She was relieved and happy to be able to have a normal conversation. "So, you knew you would be a bride?" she asked. Setsuna nodded. "Ever since I was little, I've known. My parents always raised me for this," she explained. It explained her uncanny beauty and polite manners. And yet Yui frowned. She couldn't imagine being okay with living with vampires. After all that happened, she never gave up trying to escape alive. Setsuna must have noticed, for she seemed surprised. "Oh, but don't worry, I'm completely okay with it! You won't have to worry about me, I know how to handle them." She winked playfully. Yui smiled, and silently hoped Setsuna wouldn't do anything to get herself killed. "Oh right, speaking of brides, who were you promised to?" Subaru asked suddenly. Reiji put his hand up to his chin thoughtfully. "Right," he said, "I don't suppose they specified who the bride would go to." "Well, anyway to determine it ourselves? Give me a night, and she'll be all mine," Laito chuckled. "Heh, you pervert. We could always just hold a contest to see who she goes to." Ayato suggested. "What kind of contest?" Kanato asked. Ayato shrugged. "I don't know. Why don't we do 'whoever can have the most impact on her by the end of the day,' huh?" "Impact? You mean like, fear?" Subaru asked. "Or why not pain, or pleasure, hm?" Laito suggested again. Ayato dismissed him a second time. "Just most memorable for her, I guess. Whoever can shake her the most. Doesn't matter what you do." "Heh, sounds fun, right Teddy?" Kanato cooed, confiding in his Teddy again. As always, he seemed to get a response from it that nobody else could understand. "Oh, well," Setsuna said, "I hope you don't mind if I resist a little then. To make it fair. Whoever can get me to stop resisting is the winner, right?" Yui was surprised again that she would go along with their plans, but forced herself to get used to it. This is how it was to be for the rest of her life. Reiji smirked, his composure relaxing a little. "Resist all you want. it's the best reaction anyway." Setsuna seemed surprisingly thrilled by the response. "Great. Now, I guess to mark the start of the contest, I'll head up to my room," she said, standing up, "please excuse me." The boys accepted her notion as Yui got up to escort her to her room. And the contest began.
