okay, so . . . here's what everyone thought had happened in Scream 2 ::
Randy tried to stall the 'killer' on the phone while Dewey and Gale ran around, trying to find who was making the call to them. After all, the Killer was saying things only someone in the direct vicinity would know.
Randy was SUPPOSED to stay still while the two star-crossed lovahs ran around to find the source of the call. He didn't stay put.
Instead, Randy was trying to find out who the killer was himself. And that was when he ended up getting grabbed and brought into the back of the news van, where Mrs. Loomis stabbed him to death.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
In SCREAM 3, Randy had a video recorded, saying that 'if you're watching this, then it means I did not survive the murders in college'. NOW, the man who has knowledge about all things serial killers and movies seemed to know pretty much HOW the scenario would play out, even though no one had known really about Sidney's brother. In Scream 3, it is shown that at the end, Rolan ( Sid's half-bro ) had on a bullet proof vest so that he could not DIE by bullet shot to the chest ( he then takes off the bullet proof vest like a dumb ******** idiot ).

NOW, what if . . . Randy ACTUALLY did not die?
Sure, when the van was opened up after Gale and Dewey saw it shaking, a very dead looking Randy flopped out, dangling there with blood all over his body and coming out of his mouth. HOWEVER, Randy had been shot in the FIRST MOVIE, a wound that everyone thought would be the death of him. After all, he was shot POINT BLANK IN THE CHEST.
What if . . . Gale and Dewey told everyone that Randy was dead, as a cover to keep him alive? After all, the targets in every movie are the people who survived the previous installations. WHAT IF it was a way for Randy and his sister to stay SAFE? ( His sister shows up briefly in the third movie to deliver the recorded video Randy made to be played post-humously ).
I think that Randy actually had some stage blood and ( perhaps ) a bullet proof vest on. The college WAS putting on a drama for their stage performance that year, and Sidney was the leading lady. So it is VERY POSSIBLE the theatre department had fake blood / stage blood on hand. AND, Randy knew better than to wander around while a killer ( or two ) was on the loose. Now, wearing the bullet proof vest doesn't prevent injury, it just blocks bullets and other sharp objects from truly penetrating one's body. The stabs hurt, but did NOT cause Randy death. And I bet you anything Randy helped run lines with Sidney for the performance. And he really is good at 'acting'.
All in ALL, I say Randy actually could have survived. Mrs. Loomis did not stay and make sure Randy was dead -- all she did was stab until he stopped screaming and moving. All of which the audience did not see. Whereas everyone else's death . . . we saw happen . . . suspicious, no?
