Daniel was born in a family of hunters generations long. They didn't call themselves vampire hunters back then - they hunted down 'creatures of hell' and 'sent them back to their Master', that sort of thing. Other did the same thing, but his family line was unique - each firstborn son of a new generation had near-immortality - they stopped aging in their twenties, and lived for 150 years, give or take. The family blood was said to be imbued with the power of God - amusingly enough, it was actually a black-magic ritual and deal with a demon, done by an ancient ancestor, that did it. But no one's supposed to know that.
Daniel was a rarity, as he was born before his father was even close to retirement age. However, they soon learned that two hunters working together achieved much more than one, so Daniel became a full-fledged Hunter by age seventeen. He worked with his father for a while, then alone for a bit - the two did not get along very well.
In his 24th year, he was on the trail of a particularly evil vampire lord - an Ancient that ran a school in a small English town for Hell only knows what reason. There were rumours he was seeking acolytes for some kind of cult. It was there that Daniel ran into a young Alexander Covington, the brother of one of the vampire's students. Alexander was twenty at the time - a shy, delicate, stuttering young man who was strangely fascinated with Daniel and followed him around everywhere like an annoying little bee. But Daniel, in his turn, became fascinated with the boy - Alex was always so sweet and gentle, and in awe of everything, of the entire world around him - he wanted to experience everything, see it all. He had such big dreams. On the cusp of his own immortality, Daniel found this so appealing. He fell for the boy, hard, but when the vampire moved to London, taking his students with him, Daniel had no choice but to follow, leaving a heartbroken Alexander behind.
In London, Daniel managed to confront the vampire, but lost the fight and was nearly killed and thrown into the Thames. He managed to survive, but by the time he returned, the vampire and his acolytes had scattered. He never did find them, though he heard many years later that the entire cult had been destroyed in Venice by one of the followers and her brother.
Jump to many, many years later -- a hardened, battle-weary Daniel has a chance meeting that changes things for him forever. He was nearing the end of his stolen life (another twenty years would make 150), and he'd lost his father a year prior, in a fight with another vampire lord. Even more tragically, the vampire, to hurt the man's son, changed him. Daniel's father begged the boy to kill him, but he couldn't -- so the man killed himself. Heartbroken, Daniel sought solace in his work - and one lonely night, found Eric, utterly by chance. (Or was it?) He acted shocked by Eric's turning, and Eric also was surprised by Daniel's actual profession.
After a bloody fight, an emotional and passionate reunion (on a rooftop in the rain), and a cigarette, Daniel confessed that he'd found out Eric was what he hunted years before - and he sought him out to ask him one thing. He wanted Eric...to turn him. He was terrified of dying, and of becoming as weak as his father was - and in fact, loathed the man (and always had.) He thought he was weak for killing himself - because he'd been turned. He had -power- and he just -threw it away-. Eric was shocked, disgusted, angry and heartbroken, and no matter how much Daniel begged or threatened, turned him down and left. Daniel swore revenge against his former love, and now the two are sworn enemies - the Hunter continuing to try and find some way to gain the power he seeks.
