It was a night like any other night, as I sat down in the grass near Blackwood Pond. Since winter had gone by and spring was nearing its end, it was the perfect time to star gaze.
The stars sure are bright tonight…
I thought as I leaned back into the grass and closed my eyes. I’ve always been interested in space, and seeing the stars made me feel as if I could jump up and touch them and their bright, golden colors.
As I started to close my eyes again, I looked straight up at the moon. It was just about the time that the moon would look larger than usual, and tonight it certainly did.
Before I knew what hit me, I had fell asleep on the nice, soft grass a couple feet away from Blackwood Pond. I usually dreamed of my wishes, places I had been earlier that day, but this dream was different. I could see me at the gate of my town; only nobody else was there.
“Hello? What’s going on?” I could see myself call out, but there was no reply.
As I watched myself a bit longer, the entire scene changed. For a moment all I could see was black as if someone had blindfolded me. Then my vision returned, but the scene I could now see wasn’t good. It was the town I lived in, only people were making an escape into the forest that guarded its borders.
It was hard to make out what was happening, but then I realized it. Every building in my town was on fire! I tried to locate myself in the scene but crowds of people were running out so I couldn’t see me. After most of the citizens of Kertane were out, I was able to find out where I was. At the foot of the path that comes into my town Kertane, I saw myself just standing there. I was looking for somebody, and I could tell that I wasn’t leaving until I found him or her.
As I thought of who I could be looking for, it hit me. Where were my parents? Surely they could have made it out in time before flames engulfed our house? At least I hoped.
Before my dream continued any further, I woke up by someone or something shoving me.
“Huh?” I managed to say before I felt ice-cold water go up my back, until I was soaked in it.
“Ha! I got you again Triann!” I heard my friend Galen say to me as I jumped out Blackwood Pond, draining water out of my hair. Lately Galen’s thought it was funny to push me into the water while I was sleeping, and the more he did it, the more mad I became.
“That’s the third time this week I was able to get you.” Galen said between laughs.
“Very funny Galen, you woke me up!” I shouted at him.
“Next time I’m gonna get you instead.” I gave him a smile that he knew meant he was in for it.
“I’d like to see you try Triann. But I’ll get you first like always.” Galen laughed at me again, and then came over to help me dry off. My real name was actually Trianna, but everyone called me Triann for short.
“Hey Triann, want to take a walk through Thorne Forest again?” Galen asked me. I had already went on a walk with him through Thorne Forest before I went to bed yesterday and I really didn’t feel like going again after our incident with a bee’s nest the other day.
“No not today. I want to go back to my house and get something to eat.” I told him while yawning through half of it. Then I started walking up the path to Kertane, thinking about the dream I had that night.
“Aw, come on Triann. It’s too early to have breakfast when you just got up. Can’t we just take one walk through the forest and then come back?” He pleaded to me as he pointed towards our town, Kertane.
“Oh alright, just a quick walk. Then we go straight back to Kertane, ok?” I sighed as I walked over to Galen.
“Sure, now c’mon, let’s go!” He took my hand and we ran off into Thorne Forest.
As we walked into the forest I strolled down the path, going slowly so I could look at the area around me. Everything looked so alive, the birds in the trees, a hooting from an owl in the distance, and even the trees that surrounded the stone path I was walking on.
For a minute I didn’t even realize Galen had got ahead of me and was out of sight, for I was lost in my thoughts of that terrifying dream. Could that dream…be some kind of sign? Only time could tell.
If that dream was some kind of sign, what could it have meant?
I pondered the thought while I was walking. I had been so busy thinking I didn’t notice I passed Galen in the trees, that is, until he whistled to get my attention.
“What are you doing up there?” I laughed and climbed up next to him. I was about to tell him about the dream I had, but I decided not to. For some reason, I just couldn’t tell him. At least, I couldn’t tell him yet.
