Chapter 2, A Dream Becomes Future Sight
As we were climbing down the tree to head back, black clouds started filling the sky, until it became completely dark.

“That’s strange why would it be dark out already? We’ve only been in Thorne Forest for only about an hour.” Galen questioned, and then turned to look at me.

“I don’t know but look! The sky behind us is lighter. Maybe it’s going to rain over here soon.” I looked up at Galen and smiled. We both loved the rain, but when I smiled, he didn’t do the same back. He kept staring at the sky, and therefore I knew something was wrong.

“It’s not rain, there’s a fire somewhere ahead of us.” Galen said as he turned and looked down at me. Galen was fifteen and I was only thirteen going on fourteen, so he knew more about these kinds of things than I did.

“Are you sure?” But before Galen could answer, he grabbed my hand and ran to Kertane, with me running by his side.

As we ran, something felt very strange. This seemed very familiar, then I realized why.

A fire…wait a minute! The only town around here is Kertane. Which means…my dream really was a sign!

“Ouch!” I yelled as I tripped over a vine. Thorne Forest had vines growing all over, but this was the first time I had actually tripped over one before.

“Hurry up, Triann! We need to get to Kertane before it’s too late!” Galen shouted and ran back to me to help get back up.

By the time we made it to Blackwood Pond I was totally exhausted from running. There was only a little bit more until we made it to Kertane, so I tried to push myself on.

As we ran to the gate of our town, we could see that the fire was surely coming from Kertane. We opened the gate and ran inside, and when we did tons of people pushed their ways out of the gate.

Every building around us was already on fire, and the smoke and fumes from it all made it hard to see or think. I knew I had to find my parents and get them out before the rest of my dream came true.

Wait, where’s Galen?!

I turned around to look for him, but Galen was nowhere in sight. The fumes from the fire were getting so terrible it was hard for me to stand correctly without my vision becoming blurry, and my feet stepping in the wrong places, causing me to collapse.

“Galen must have left after the fire got so bad.” I said to myself. I knew I should leave too but I had to find my parents. Out of all the people that left the town I never saw them. In fact, not a lot of people had left either. The rest must not have been able to make it out in time.
“Mom! Dad!” I called out as tears ran down my face. Nobody answered. By now the smoke surrounded me from all around, and I couldn’t see. Whatever happened after that point I do not know, for I passed out from the fire.

The next morning I woke up and looked around. Only parts of the houses remained after the fire the day before. I turned around and got up but nobody was there. Everyone had left, including Galen. I had to find my friend, but first I went over to one of the houses and searched for anything left that had not been burned. I couldn’t find anything that was still usable. As I turned to go see my house, hoping that at least one of my possessions was still there, something caught my eye in the next house over. Something was shining under a couple of burned pieces of wood from the house when it collapsed from the fire.

“What’s that?” I questioned and walked over to the pieces of wood, throwing them aside.

I picked it up and looked at it. The thing I had found was some kind of amulet, only it had a stone in the middle and four stones on the sides that were all the same beautiful blue color. They all hung from a necklace that looked as though it were made of gold, which was a very valuable item in our town ever since it had been discovered here.

“How come this wasn’t destroyed in the fire?” I wondered and leaned in to look at it more closely. Then I noticed there was writing around the middle stone, but it was in some other language I couldn’t understand. Quickly I looked around to see if anyone was looking, then I put it around my neck. It was heavy on me, but I wanted to bring it with me since it was the only thing left of my town. For some strange reason though, I had a feeling it was special.
