The show is part of a ten city tour.
This is Chyane's first Lips concert!!!!
I was excited to finally get to see the Lips in person. I normally wouldn't have a Thursday night off but I asked for it by saying to my boss "remember the ringtone on my phone that you hate? I bought tickets to see them." (the ringtone in question is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots)
I get the night off and am done at work about three. I chill out a bit at home and head to House of Blues at Disney where it is at. I hate traffic, that's why I leave so early. I eat, go to Virgin Megastore and go back to find that they still aren't letting people in (doors were supposed to open at 7:30) so I wander about some more because I really see no point in waiting in line.
I come back about 8:15 and they are letting people in, so I join the short line (passing some guy in a rabbit costume in the line)and get in. There are the usual security hassles (check your purse, metal detectors) before I get inside. The place is packed. Sold out show. OMG this is going to be so cool! I browse the merch table and pick out a pink "death plays with a futuristic machine" shirt and comment to the guy selling that I 'd like his shirt too. He has a yellow !!! (pronounced chk chk chk) shirt on, another band I like. He laughs and says no. (I wonder how many other poeple there know who they are).
Anyways, I can't get any service at the main bar, so I go to a side bar where I talk to the bartender Chewie (seriously) who tells me the hold up with opening was that the sound check was late. Ugh. The crowd is batting around about 6 or 7 balloons in the main area when the opening band comes on. I find a nice spot in the back.
Stardeath and White Dwarfs is actually a pretty cool band. Very much in tune with the Lips. They play a 40 or so minute set. Wayne and company I can actually see on the side of the stage. Pretty cool to stand there and support your opening band. Everyone from both sides helps clear off and re-set the stage. (That's really cool too) Which helps the show start sooner. During this phase, people costumed as superheroes are passing out laser pointers. Nice.
This is where I meet the weird lady of the night. I was standing and just waiting when I feel a gentle pulling on my hair. ( I have long hair in RL) Anyways, this lady is petting my hair!! When I turned around, she said that she tries to do it without the person noticing and asked me what conditioner I used! WTF?! Anyways, her male companion says that she does it all the time (strange) but she didn't bother me again the rest of the night.
The Show starts. Lots of very large balloons and yellow confetti. Wayne comes out with some very oversized hands. (the only kitchy prop of the night) There are six people on either side of the stage with flashlights. Stage right are girls dressed as aliens and stage left are guys dressed like Santa... huh? Anyways, they are there all through the show waving flashlights and such.
The laser pointers come into play later in the show when they turn out all the lights and we get to shoot Wayne (and a reflective surface)...mimicking a red star. Pretty cool effect. There were some interesting videos playing behind them but otherwise, it was a pretty basic show. Lots of confetti and streamers throughout and some balloon popping throughout. The whole time seemed to be the fans and the band just having a good time without a lot of props. It was a good time and I hope that they don't wait 15 years to come back.
I didn't make any kind of set list. Sorry. Most of the songs were from the last two albums and they played "she don't use Jelly"
