Born in 1904 Theodor Seuss Geisel would one day become arguably the most well known children’s author ever.
Theodor first got into literature in College where he became the editor in chief of the College’s humour magazine. However his work was cut short when he was banned from all extracurricular activities after being caught at an illegal drinking party. To continue to contribute to the magazine Theodor needed a pen name, he chose Seuss, which was both his middle name and his mothers maiden name.
The ‘Dr.’ didn’t come until later, Theodor’s father wanted him to become a college professor so Theodor was sent to Oxford, however the academic studies bored him so he never got his PHD, at this point the ‘Dr.’ came into being and “Dr. Seuss” was born.
The first big break came to Theodor when he wrote a slogan for Standard Oil (<QUOTE HERE> wink which would become a catchphrase of the generation.
The first book published by Dr. Seuss was ‘And to think that I saw it on Mulberry street’ however he had to try very hard to get it published, it was rejected 27 times before Vangaurd press finally decided to publish it.
Perhaps the defining book of Dr. Seuss’ career ‘The Cat in the Hat’ was made to encourage kids to read. The main reason that kids didn’t like reading at the time was because there were no books that kids could read by themselves. Seuss was told to remedy this and was given 300 words which he could use, Seuss himself admitted that the task seemed impossible, just as he was about to give up his eye fell upon two words. ‘Cat’ and ‘Hat’. Seuss managed to finish the book and it was an instant success, at its peak it was estimated that <NUMBER OF COPIES SOLD PER _____>.
From there Seuss would write many more stories, many of which contained underlying messages or views. For example the story ‘the sneeches’ which is about birds who are divided into two groups those with stars on their stomachs and those who don’t have stars represents racism, and even when the two became ‘equal’ (the ones with no stars found a way to get stars) the other group refused to accept them still.
