Yuzi's Musings
Hmm...
Hayhay everyone <3 I'd like to thank everyone who commented on my last journal entry. It really means a lot heart

School and life if getting busy! I started hospital work this quarter, and Im about half of the way through. It takes a lot of critical/on your feet thinking, and a lot of practice and knowing your s**t about diseases, patient communication, skills, etc. (Not to mention the myriad of drugs you have to remember!) BUT, I love it. It's really rewarding when you walk into a patient's room and you gain that trust from them. I have problems with my confidence at this level, but it seems like everytime I walk into a room, they're telling me I'll make a good nurse and then proceed to tell me why. I think I need that for my self-esteem. It makes me AWESOMELYHAPPY when the instructor on the floor with us asks me if Ive done something/what a med is/ what a skill is/etc and I get it RIGHT and quick. It doesnt always happen, but when it does omgitsgreat.

This week is my last week "on the floor", which means the medical/surgical floor - the one you go to if the ER decides you need to stay overnight/be admitted. Next week forward, I'll be in auxiliary departments. This means I'll be at the nursing home, OR, ER, ICU, Step-down, dialysis, the clinic, and a charity clinic. Im REALLY looking forward to going to the OR. I want to see some cool stuff.

blah, I just felt the need to say stuff cause today was an awesome day :]

You're gonna see gutsssss! Ewwww! xd

Actually, it'll probably be pretty cool. My mom works in a hospital and has since before I was born, so I've seen/heard about all kinds of wacky stuff. And now I am impossible to gross out, as an extra bonus. OR should be cool, but you might have to stand for a loooong time. 'Course, you'll be seeing surgery, which is kind of neat, so it all evens out.

@Druki: Because I was uber-prepared. I think Im instructor was impressed.

@Fuben: I got to see a colostomy today and help empty it out. It stunk XD

Im used to walking around/standing for long periods of time now. I have a good pair of comfortable sneakers, so Ill be good. If Im looking at something interesting, I probably wont be worrying about my feet XD

A friend of mine works at a colorectal surgeon's, so I've heard all about that kind of stuff. Apparently people do/say some weird stuff coming out from under the anesthesia there. xd

I've been an lpn for 12 years and have been in college for a couple years. I start clinicals in Aug. for my degree in nursing. Once I pass state boards I will be an R.N. which is probably what you are doing. I work med / surge now as an lpn. Yep, you're right about the critical, on your feet and all that. I work 12 hour shift. sweatdrop
But the money is really nice. pirate Best of luck to you

As someone who has spent more time than they would like in a hospital, I can tell you, in my opinion what I think makes a good nurse.

1. Understanding and caring: Even if you cannot do what the patient wants due to not having the correct Dr. orders, letting them know that you care about how they feel and are doing everything that you can to help them makes a difference. Especially where pain is the issue.

2. The slightest touch can be very reassuring. Hands or arms are usually a safe bet.

3. Be real, a patient can tell if you are just going through the motions.

4. Please don't feel like I am telling you what to do! I have just spent years in and out of hospitals and I can still remember the names of my favorite nurses!
