Battle Cry
This is where I'm going to be posting a story I wrote called "Battle Cry"
The Meet
Allie never left the earth, but instead she was in a different form, the form of a ghost, a spirit. She glanced at her hand, she could almost see through it. “What… What happened to me?” She whispered gently to herself. Her voice seemed to have a slight echo. She was now trembling, she was afraid of what she had become.
“Ehem.” Someone coughed behind her. “Allie?” It said. Her body turned in the direction but it took some effort to make her head do the same.
“Y… Yes?” She asked still trembling.
“You haven’t left this planet yet because you have some order of business left here.” There was no physical being standing behind her, only a voice speaking. “Go forth and complete the task and then your soul may move on.” Allie stood completely still. Her ghost form filled with shock. She thought that she could finally move on, live a life of happiness.
“But I don’t remember anything before my death. I remember dying, but that’s it.” She waited for the voice to say something in return, but there was nothing said. Well this is just great! I don’t remember a thing and I have to perform some task that I should know of but I don’t…UGH! She rambled in thought. Her feet led her, she was unsure of where she was headed. She got out on to the city streets; people crowed them, even at night. She nearly flew past them. Making sure to avoid any physical contact with any human. There were many men who seemed to be searching for things, but there was one man who caught her interest. He looked oddly familiar. His head hung as he walked. It’s really a shame he won’t notice me. Two reasons would stop him. One his head is down and two I’m invisible to the human eye. His eyes wondered the ground. As she was about to pass him he wobbled to the side. She gasped and his head popped up. He looked over his shoulder in her direction. He can’t see me, he can’t see me! She repeated the words in her head.
“You!” His voice was surprised. “You were easier to find then I thought you were going to be.”
“What? Wait you can see me?” Her voice was just as surprised as his.
“Anyone can see you!” His eyes raised in confusion.
“No…I’m dead.” She mumbled. His brow creased. He reached for her hand in attempt to see who was right. His hand slid gently through hers like as if it were just simple air.
“But how? I had seen you only few hours ago.”
“I don’t know. And you had seen me? A few hours ago?” Her voice was stuttered and a whisper. She was trying to put the scattered pieces into order, she knew the guy looked familiar but they had only seen each other?
“You had seen me too. I know you did, we met eye to eye. I saw fear leak from your eyes, I knew then I had to find you.” The man rambled on. Sentences that only confused her more.
“Look, I have no clue what you’re talking about. You’re making absolutely no scenes to me! You’re only giving a ghost a migraine.” She pronounced then sighed heavily. Her lips were now speaking in gentle whispers. “I don’t know how I died. I don’t remember you, or anyone else for that matter. I hardly remember the pain that I just endured. Lets just leave it, as I’m pretty much incoherent figment of your imagination.”
“You don’t remember a thing? The group you were hanging around with? Anything?” She began to float away. A gust of wind hit and her chin length, bronze, straight hair sawed lightly under neither the black beanie she was wearing, as though the wind had more force than his hand when it touched her. He ran to catch up with her. He was nearly winded and shaking from the frosted night. “Wait!” He said bending down. He supported his body with his knees bent and his hand on them barely holding his slender upper body up.
“What is you’re name, sir?”
“Stephan.” He managed out through gasps of oxygen.
“Stephan, by following me you’re only making a foul out of yourself. As you can see, no one around us even notices my existence. People hear you talking to me and they think you have mental capacity issues. They think you’re crazy! Like you need to be locked up somewhere. So for your own sake hold back on the temptation to follow me, let alone talk to me.”
“I cant just do that.”
“And why not? It seemed as no bother for you to leave me alone before. I mean, you said yourself that you seen fear in my eyes and yet you didn’t come up to me nor did you try to see what was wrong. So obviously it’s not that hard to leave me be, sir.”
“I wasn’t able to come to you yet, you see I was held back. Please, if you follow me to a place where no one will think I’m talking to myself and I will explain everything.” He saw doubt in her eyes.
“Right now isn’t the best time I am busy with a task that I must finish to move on.” She knelt down beside him. “I must go now. Do not follow.”
“You don’t even know who you are, and you’re trying to fulfill a task without any help? And you think people call me crazy.” He glanced up at her through his thick eyelashes.
“I know who I am!” She sounded appalled. She stood back up. “I just don’t remember what happened before I died.” She mumbled only so loud that she could hear.
“Then what is your name?” His voice was wondrous.
“Allie!” She stood proud. “Allie Farris Grant!” after a long minute she slid back down in her crouch beside him and sighed heavily. “Okay, fine. You are the only one to see me after all which means you must be some help to me.”
“I’m glad you agree.” Stephan smiled weakly still attempting to catch his breath, but the ice was to thick in the air it only stung his throat more. “We should probably go back to the group…I mean my group. It’ll be better temperature there for me. Maybe the warm is what you need to remember.” He stated as though it were some joke. “Maybe you just have a brain freeze.” He laughed lightly to himself.
“Lets go before I find some way to hurt you.” She said through her teeth. He picked himself up and led the way to an old apartment complex. It looked to be many decades since the place ever had any repairs.
