You're Not Alone: Chapter Four
Chapter Four
The Bedtime Song

Night had fallen, and Kat and her new-found follower, Blake, were still talking up a storm.
"So you're a farmer's daughter, ay?" Blake asked.
"Yeah, what about it?" Kat said defensively.
"Nothing, nothing! It's just that most farmer girls I've seen are at home cooking and cleaning and crap. But you're...you're out here on your own."
Kat nodded and pulled the cart up more.
Blake nudged her shoulder and laughed, "Not too fond of your old man and the farm life, huh?"
Kat looked at him angrily, but then calmed down. It wasn't Blake's fault he was joking around. He didn't know about her father's death.
"My father's dead," Kat said blankly.
Blake came to a sudden halt, his face in a state of shock.
"I'm really sorry," he said, as if he almost understood what it was like to lose a father, "If I would've known I wouldn't have cracked jokes like that, man." He drooped his head and began to kick rocks around in the dirt with his feet.
Kat stood silently facing him, wondering if she should comfort the guy, or tell him to stop calling her "man"... But suddenly Blake laughed nervously and smiled.
And somehow, everything was okay again.
Finally they stopped and set up camp in a field. Blake lit a fire, and they sat around it. He pulled out a guitar from the oddly shaped backpack on his back and began to play.
Kat felt as if she knew the words to the song he was playing, and suddenly the words emptied from her mouth:

"You're not alone,
there is more to this I know.
You can make it out-"

Kat blushed a dark shade of red and slapped her hand over her mouth. How did she know those words??
Blake looked at her in complete suprise, but he smiled and went back to playing, finishing where Kat had left off:

"You can make it out,
you will live to tell..."

He had the most amazing voice Kat had heard since her father - and just then she remembered where she had heard the song. Her father Millen used to sing it to her when he tucked her into bed at night.
Kat smiled, and soon she was drowned in Blake's voice.
Drowned in his voice, just as she had drowned in his smile. And just as she forgot to ask him why he was following her, she forgot to ask how he knew her old bedtime song...
