I was watching FOX News yesterday (woot!) and they were having a debate on whether or not Paris Hilton should go to jail. WELL OF COURSE SHE SHOULD. D: The argument of the Paris Hilton supporters was that she should simply have to pay a fine. Their reasoning was that if you made it high enough, say $5,000,000 even she would learn her lesson, and it would "help the government with funding." Riiiight, no it wouldn't. It was either that or give her a choice ( I don't think the absurdity of that sunk in enough...GIVER HER A CHOICE.) of whether to pay the fine or go to jail for 45+ days. Well gee whiz, what do you think she would pick?
Paris: "Hmm, should I spend daddy's money or go to jail? I wonder..."
Pfft, she'd spend the damn money. I don't think anyone really wants to spend any time in jail if they can avoid it entirely. I mean, this is just stupid to me. If you did that for Paris Hilton, every other rich person in America, not just celebrities, would expect the same spoiled rotten treatment, or "royalties" for having disobeyed the law. That would mean a humongous change, you would have to make an entirely new set of laws just pertaining to rich people.
"If your income is between $(Insert ridiculous sum here) and $(Insert even higher ridiculous sum here) you have to pay $(some ridiculous some in between)."
Why the hell should America even have to have debates about this!? Who cares if they're rich? They're still human beings who live in America and were born under the same laws that we all have to follow! The idea of changing the rules for someone just because they have money is stupid. They made a bad choice, they committed a crime, they get punished the same way everyone who participates in criminal activity does. This should not be so damn trivial! American law will show everyone who's boss, no matter what their income, and enforce.
Not only that, but make those snobs realize that if they mess up, they can't pay their way out. They are not invincible, they are just like everyone else. We have a chance to make an example of Paris Hilton, and do the right thing. I think we should take it.
