Chapter Eleven
Busting the Culprit

I woke to the smell of bacon and eggs. Dad usually never made a big breakfast on weekdays, so I enjoyed every bit and then headed for my bus stop. Zack was there, so I hid with Brittany and Destiny.
“Brit, Dez, you guys have to hide me! See that kid?” I pointed at Zack. “I need to stay away from him.”
“First, pay up. It snowed all night and stopped around five.” Dez said. I handed her a dollar. “Still up for a sleep over on Friday? Even though you lost, we can still have one, right?” Dez asked.
“I think Courtney wants to sleep over, but I’ll just tell her we can do one on Saturday.” I replied. Dez smiled. I knew she was excited, because we hadn’t had a sleep over at her house in nearly two months. She liked my house, but at my house, she didn’t have a room full of toys. The only thing she would miss if we were at her house was the trampoline in our back yard. But she had a pool in her back yard, which was five times as fun because her pool was a good size, and we had made up at least ten fun games to play in the pool, such as Noodle Fight, where we hit each other over the head with water noodles, or Squirt, which we used with noodles that were hollow and had holes in them. We filled them with water and blew into one end, pushing water out the other end. The idea was to squirt the other players, but usually the others were too fast, leaving us only with sore cheeks. It was fun anyways, because just that we were friends hanging out together was enough. Sides, I missed my best friends. They were the closest thing I had to sisters. As the bus pulled up, I saw Zack coming in line behind me. He smiled.
“Hi Liz. How’s your day going?” He asked.
“Hey, have you talked to Evan lately?” I asked.
“Did you know about his...”
“Ankle?” I cut off. “Yes. He told me you dropped the box at my house.”
“Oh, uh, that. Yeah. He asked me where you lived and I told him you lived down the street.” He said, sounding nervous. “Did you break up with him?”
“No! Are you insane?”
“Apparently.” he muttered.
“What?”
“Nothing.”

“What’s up with this Zack kid?” Grampa asked.
“It’s a long story. He was a little spy. But what happens next is a real surprise, so be prepared. It shocked me as well.”

When I stepped off the bus, I noticed that Zack was following me, so I decided to go where he can’t follow me. I went in the girls bathroom and looked out the corner. He stood there, waiting for me to exit. So, I when saw Jane and Allison, I made a plan. The first step. Exit the bathroom through another door. When I looked behind me, he was rounding the corner. My mind told me to run, but I didn’t. I simply kept walking. When I got to E corridor, I stopped to let him catch up. Second part of the plan.
“Hi, how are you?” He asked
“Were you following me?” I asked.
“Oh, uh, No! I wasn’t following you if that’s what you think.” He lied badly.
“You were, weren’t you?”
“I said no.”
“Did you not follow me?”
“No. I mean, yes, yes I was not following you. Who said I was following you?”
It was time to initiate the last phase of my plan. I had Jane and Allison hiding casually in the crowd. “Ladies, its time.” I said. Jane and Allison came to my side.
“Why were you following my friend?” Jane demanded.
“I wasn’t!” He fearfully replied. I smiled.
“Do we have to beat the truth out?” Allison said. Allison was especially strong. She even scared me when she said it, even though I knew she was on my side.
“No! Leave me alone!” Zack yelled.
“Why didn’t you leave our friend alone?” Jane demanded. “Why did you follow her?”
“Because I like her!” Zack yelled. He covered his mouth, as if to say oops.
“Busted!” I yelled. At that moment, to my surprise, Evan came up on a pair of crutches! He gave Zack a disgusted look.
“And you call yourself my friend? Your not my friend any more!” Evan yelled. “Get out of here!” Zack ran.
“Evan!” I yelled. “I thought you said you wouldn’t be back for a week! How’d you get out sooner?” I asked.
“The doctor didn’t think my injury was that bad, so he let me go earlier than I was supposed to. Are you still mad at me?” He asked. “I got your e-mail.”
“No. Not any more.” I said. I gave him a big hug, almost knocking him off his crutches. He just smiled and we laughed.
