Myspace Rants Episode 2: "Ethnicities Rant" |

I'm sick of how stupid people can be when they make surveys, profiles, etc., and they have that idiotic "Ethnicities" section that they can just never get right.
For instance, on our very own beloved myspace website, they happen to contain a cute little section here, whereas, you can post your "Background/Ethnicity". These are the choices:
No Answer Asian Black / African Decent East Indian Latino / Hispanic Middle Eastern Native American Pacific Islander White / Caucasian Other
Bullshit. Let me first address "Black / African Descent"... Excuse me? African Descent? Only African? This of course, stating (quoting Maddox) that you couldn't have POSSIBLY came from Haiti, India, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Australia, or Jamaica. Every black person on Earth is from Africa. Of course!
But this doesn't even address this--- What if you're white and came from Africa? Why is there just a "Black" button, and an "African Descent" button? Bullshit, all of it. Also, there's the fact that you could have had all your relatives born in America and still be black. But hey, you know, what about the fact that at SOME POINT one of your family members came from Africa?
Well, if we'd be counting that, then why not just put "African Descent" on EVERY choice there?!
Now, to keep this short, I'll skip to Native American and White / Caucasian. Oww, my bullshit detector is beeping so loud it hurts my EARS! Myspace, stop putting CRAP like this!
Now, there's a chance that everyone out there who's an American white person chose "White / Caucasian" without even giving a thought to labeling yourself as a "Native American". Now check this, idiots:
na·tive [ney-tiv] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –adjective 1. being the place or environment in which a person was born or a thing came into being: one's native land. 2. belonging to a person by birth or to a thing by nature; inherent: native ability; native grace. 3. belonging by birth to a people regarded as indigenous to a certain place, esp. a preliterate people: Native guides accompanied the expedition through the rain forest. 4. of indigenous origin, growth, or production: native pottery.
Straight from dictionary.com. If I posted the whole thing, it'd make this already long bulletin longer. But if you can interpret the definition, you'll see my point:
If you were born in America, you're native to the land. That's it. Don't give me any "Indians were here first" crap. Yes, they did arrive first, but that doesn't mean that it's not our land as well. If you're referring to the Indians of the land, refer to them as Tribal Americans.
Native Americans ≠ Tribal Americans. Point made?
And also, White / Caucasian. "Caucasian" is possibly the stupidest label I've ever heard endowed upon a man, even worse than "African American". Those of you who don't know what the term means, don't use it. And it doesn't mean "white".
Taken straight from the Wikipedia article for it, here's Blumenbach's interpretation of it.
"Caucasian variety - I have taken the name of this variety from Mount Caucasus, both because its neighborhood, and especially its southern slope, produces the most beautiful race of men, I mean the Georgian; and because all physiological reasons converge to this, that in that region, if anywhere, it seems we ought with the greatest probability to place the autochthones (birth place) of mankind."
I underlined the keywords. Just for you.
In other words, this man developed a theory that the "great Caucasian race", the "most beautiful race of men", upon descending from the Caucus Mountains, is probably the most likely to hold the birthplace of man.
i.e. EVERYONE DESCENDED FROM THE CAUCASIANS.
Gives you a feeling of superiority, eh? Hey, but that's racist.
rac·ism [rey-siz-uhm] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –noun 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
QED, Luke Morgan.
I hope you enjoyed reading and learned a little about ethnicity stupidity.
