The best fantasy heroes are the rogues, the young and older men who have separated themselves from society. The ones who care more than most people, but choose not to show it. They can very easily go unnoticed, for they don’t make a point of being known. Many times they are misunderstood (i.e. when Strider was in Bree *LOTR*), yet mainly they do a lot of good for people, often without a word of thanks. They live with the demons of mistakes they have made in the past. They love, but not the superficial love of most people. It is deeper love that can be cast on many people: their best friend, one of their siblings, or the people that they often see during their adventures. They are usually enemies of the governing powers (i.e. Sirius Black *Harry Potter*, Jack Sparrow & Will Turner *Pirates of the Caribbean*). They sometimes have problems with taking rash actions, but usually are wise enough to solve their way out of a situation. Some (i.e. Strider) have a close connection to nature. All have a special skill they have worked to perfect (Strider: tracking, Will: fencing, Jack: wiliness, Sirius: magic). They live tragic lives, but they don’t let unhappy fate rule their choices.
Now, a word on their looks. Rogues must have strong bodies in order to live the way they do, and often must go without food, making them a little gaunt. Longish, messy hair shows their lack of interest in people’s perception of them. Many have dark hair, but light hair is also common. They dress in many different ways, some dress simply, some dress according to the fashions of the times, others may dress eccentrically, and some dress dark, while still others like to stay mysterious with a cloak and hood or mask. They have piercing eyes that seem to be able to judge what you are thinking.
Women rogues, though rare, are not unheard of. They are very similar to their male counterparts in attitudes and behaviors. Most have more faith in romance than the men do, and then some others completely detest romance. The women usually wear their hair short to keep it out of their way.
As you may have noticed, many of my claims go two ways, and that is because, like all people, every rogue is unique. They actually have a lot of personal freedom and strength of character, both of which are essential to creating and individual who is different from everyone else in a society.
