I was looking up the story/plot/whatever thing of the Resident Evil games, and it got me thinking. Resident Evil really helped shape allot of my stories, whether that’s good or bad, I'm not sure. I've never actually played the games (survival horror isn't my cup of tea) but I did watch my next door neighbors older brother playing one of the games, I don't remember which one,(but further research strongly suggests Code Veronica) but I do remember this one specific cut seen.
Now, It should be pointed out that at the time, I was six or seven years old. Also, Steven was not the ideal role model, as he was several years older, enjoyed occasionally tormenting his younger brothers and their friend, i.e. me, and also the person who taught me, directly or indirectly, every single curse word I know. So he was probably getting a big kick out off showing me something so obviously creepy and messed up.
But anyway, I blithely watch the cut-scene. Some girl walks into a big empty room, and on the far wall, some guy is in a chair, a ax or some such thing stuck in the wall so that the long handle holds him in. They share some dialog, along the lines of "oh my god, your all right, I was so worried" "NO! you have to get out of here!" "what, why?" "I can't...ARGGH" At which point the guy starts to mutate into some big a** monster while the girl falls the ground sobbing and declaring that it just cant be happening. I watched the fight that ensues, and then, big surprise, more trauma. The Monster regains his senses, saves the girl, but is wounded. He turns back into human, dieing in her arms after telling her he loves her.
I know now that that’s a pretty common premise, if not quite in the twisted way Resident Evil portrays it, with the guy actually turning into a monster and all. but that was the first time I saw the premise, and especially in that twisted incarnation, It was actually pretty traumatic for me, as at the time that was a little more weird and messed up then my young mind could fathom, and I was stuck thinking about that scene for days
In the end I think that thing really messed up my ideas about heroics, love, etc. and a lot of my thoughts and ideas reflect that kind of twisted heroism. That’s not necessarily bad, but it's one of those life changing events and I do wonder what I would be like if I hadn't seen that cut scene or seen it at such a young age. I just started thinking about this because I've really decided to start typing up my stories, no mater how weird or, admittedly, messed up they are. That doesn't mean that I'm going to actually show them to anyone, but that’s not really the point.
Any way, not that I really expect anyone to read through this boring monologue, but If you do, I suggest that you dredge through your memories and write down what you remember as a kind of new direction or personality changing event. It can be kind of interesting to think of how something so simple, like a video games cut-scene, can really help shape who you are.
