Yesterday turned out to be far more eventful than we had anticipated. Maybe the word I'm looking for is melancholy. I can't remember exactly where we were, but somewhere about a mile away from an onramp. We came to a very long line of cars right next to a construction zone. The road we were on had been reduced to one lane traffic. I knew something was wrong when I heard sirens. First an ambulance, a fire truck, 2 more ambulances, a state trooper... and a medivac. It had to circle a few times. It landed on the opposite road, that was under construction. The helicopters engine stayed on for awhile, slowed down then shut off. At that point I was wondering if either they weren't that badly hurt... or they were dead.
A worker from the construction site went from car to car and told them to turn around and what road to go on. Only the smaller vehicles could actually turn around. The road we were sent to was a one land paved road. From there, I could see a semi that had run off the road. It's wheels had been torn off and the axels were bent up into itself. With that information I could tell that it had run over something, and I figured that something was a smaller vehicle. All we could do was wait and watch. They used a front-end loader to pull the semi off the road to let people through. When we could finally pass, it was a mess. I saw the car that got run over. It was flattened. Completely. I could smell the gas leaking from the vehicle. The helicopter had lifted off a little before that. I didn't talk much after that. Neither did the rest of my family. It delayed us for about an hour.
Anyway, we found out later that day what happened. The woman in the car had swerved out of her lane into oncoming traffic. The semi driver tried to get out of the way, but it was too late. He ran over her car, swerved off the road and into the ditch. The woman in the car was declard dead at the hospital, but I'm thinking she died instantly. The speculation was that she fell asleep at the wheel.
