“You gonna start getting ready, huh? Or are you really wanting to come back to bed?”


“I can’t lift my arms,” .D said, “I could get myself out of bed but I can’t…I can’t lift them anymore, it hurts too much.”


Izm looked closely at him and found that A.E.D’s eyes were glazed over again, in that way that meant he wasn’t really there anymore. He’d lost him again.


“I just wanna brush my teeth, put on some deodorant so I don’t smell like s**t all day but I just can’t do it.”


“And my feet, they, I don’t know why I’m still standing…”


“.D what happened…?”


“Oh, nothing, just Rire found out that we’re sharing a bed, finally, how could I have not known that was a stupid idea…? I mean I’m sure that he doesn’t like you to begin with but-”


Izm gaped at him, arms tightening around .D’s shoulders, “Rire did this to you…?”


“Huh? Oh, yeah, but I mean, he’s a jealous type, you know, after a few months of forcing himself on me I guess that means I’m his right? I was so stupid, and then he tried to make it up to me and I didn’t want it, but it felt so good and, that means I’m a whore doesn’t it?”


A.E.D was rambling, going on and on in the same mindless monotone finally concluding with, “I’m a whore.”


The words rang throughout the room, hanging stagnant in the air. Izm was sure that the anger would hit and any sense of clear headedness would leave him, but in that moment he could consider what he’d finally been told. Rire was molesting A.E.D, and had been for some time now. Last night he raped him…after beating him.


“Izm, I want to brush my teeth.”


Izm was staring at the opposite wall, feeling the anger build up, and up and up.

He’d watched .D get worse and worse, changing, losing himself and all this time the problem had been right there? Right in front of him? Izm let go of A.E.D. and threw himself out of the room and out the door, it was time to fix things.


A.E.D. stared at the toothbrush, his arms hanging numbly at his sides. His feet gave up on him and he fell back onto the floor. His legs were spread out straight in front of him, his hands resting on the floor.


“Izm, I want to brush my teeth,” he said.


But Izm was gone.
