It was four hours after dawn when I awoke. I could hardly move at all. My legs flinched my stomach growled. all I wanted however was to stay in bed. I didn't even want to think about today. The thought of my daily works made me even more reluctant to leave my room. But as usual I was shown no mercy.
I could hear the sound of my father pounding at my door with with his most enraged voice. mostly used to scare me. I opened the door, there he was standing, giving me the hardest look I had seen in ages. I said nothing.
"Your late for work my son" he spoke, seeming to get calmer.
"My apologies father, but I.."
"Never mind the excuses, get dressed. Mr. Emilio will be waiting for you at the market, He'll be running the shop for a bit while I'm away.
I didn't know what to say, I stood there frozen by his words. after a long pause I finally brought my self to say, "Leave?" I spoke surprised. "Where are you going?"
My father looked upon me with worried eyes.
"Duty calls my son..." he said softly
My words sank, It seemed odd to me that He always leaves at the most unexpected moments. sometimes when we need him the most.
"Well you'd better get going Buona fortuna my son"
He gave me a hug and walked down to the end of the hall. I couldn't see him after he went down stairs so, I did as I was told I got dressed in my usual yet distinctive garb and headed for the market.
When I arrived I could hear chickens clucking, voices shouting and the familiar jingle of pouch change. It didn't take me long to find my fathers shop It was where it always was, by the docks where travelers often passed by. I stood in front of the shop where Mr.Emilio was counting up the money from a recent purchase. When he noticed me he gave a slight jolt backward.
"Oh, Ryuga welcome child, I'm sure your father mentioned I was running the shop for him while he was away on business." He said, trading a most pleasant smile with me.
"Yes sir he did, but I wouldn't say ahead of time though" I chuckled.
"Ho ho, well that's Anthony for you, always in a hurry.." He looked away from me and continued counting. I stepped over the stand and leaned behind the work table. My family owned an Art store, our style of work was often popular at the time.
"Ryuga.." Emilio spoke with a strain in his voice. "Do you mind taking this package of portraits to a customer of ours, he'll be expecting them before mid-day so wast no time, Bene?"
"Alright I'll get it done" I picked up the box and walked down the streets. they were crowded as usual but doable" as I weaved through groups of people I heard something rather odd coming from two men who were standing outside there door across the street.
"Do you have it?" spoke one of the men in a soft tone.
"Yes I have it right here..."
"My thanks friend, I shall see to it that Emilio receives it"
"Remember my brother this document must never be let out of your sight, if it dose then the whole order will be in ruin everything were planning for will be for nothing, do you understand?" The voice seemed rather serious, although I could hardly make out what they were saying over the roar of the crowd. "I saw one of the men put the letter in his pocket and display a cautious look on his face. As He ran off I though to myself...
"They cant be talking about Mr.Emilio can they?" I wanted to get the image out my mind, but something, My gut was telling me otherwise. I spent the rest of the walk thinking of that moment.
When I arrived I knocked twice, placed the box down and walked away. as I did I could hear the calls of gratitude from the customer. However as glade as I was to hear that I could not shake that thought out of my head...
I returned to my families shop only to find that the front desk had been abandoned. "Monsieur Emilio!" I cried. "Monsieur Emilio!!" No response...
