Act III Scene I: The Worst of Humanity 1

The next day's headlines were all about the murder again: "Worker Confesses to the Rape and Murder of his Sister"

Edwin was satisfied to see how the event was recapped: his colleague was portrayed as a perverted maniac, there was some mention of their father, the governor's, position, the remorse the parents were feeling about the loss of both of their children (though their son was still alive, they no longer considered him to be a part of their family), and there was not a single mention of Edwin anywhere on the page. The last article had mentioned him briefly, calling him a "close friend" and noting him as the one to report her disappearance, but this one had a satisfying lack of credit towards him. After all, his colleague had turned himself in, and save for some dog hairs and a head-shaped dent in the wall, there was no evidence towards Edwin assaulting his colleague and forcing him into admitting. And only a lunatic would convict someone based upon dog hairs--unless they thought that there was reason to believe that he had been assaulted, no one would go snooping around. And a murderer who turned himself in didn't need any sort of investigation.

But the days were long without Alice Rose, and Edwin knew that it would not be soon that he grew accustomed to her absence. She was really, truly gone. As he walked the streets, all he could think about was her. That's why, one day on a walk, he was so shocked to hear her name mentioned that he felt the need to listen in on the conversation in which she was mentioned.

"That poor Alice Rose. She was such a dear." A group of women were crowded together, gossiping. Edwin stood at a distance where he could hear their conversation clearly, without notice.
One of them laughed at this, an insensitive, self-righteous laugh. "Poor Alice Rose? She got what was coming to her, living with an insane brother and dating some nobody war veteran."
The others laughed along, and one of them added in a hushed voice, "There was no mention of it, but I SWEAR that that man she was always seen with was involved. He worked with her brother, and undoubtedly they were friends."
"But unlike someone, he was too clever to admit to the police." They all laughed at this.
The first one seemed uncomfortable, as if she actually felt guilty. "But it makes you wonder, doesn't it... That there are some perverts out there... I mean, Alice Rose was a nice person." A snort from one, followed by a glare from the one talking. "Makes you think that it can happen to anyone."
"It won't happen to me," the second one interjected, emphasizing the word "me", "my father gives me the best protection in the state! He wouldn't let any sort of killer come near me without a bullet inbetween his eyes."
All of them except the first one laughed, and they all continued on their way.

Throughout their conversation, Edwin's fists had been clenched so tightly that the nails had cut into his skin and he was bleeding. He wasn't bothered by their mention of him, but rather how they scorned the choices she had made in her life. They disrespected her memory. What's more, that one seemed so confident that it wouldn't happen to her, and Edwin knew damn well that what the one said about it happening to anyone was true. These people were the worst of humanity. Among them included these sort of vain, selfish individuals. Murderers. Those women were as bad as murderers, as far as Edwin was concerned. Alice Rose had always told him that he should not be bothered by the worst of humanity, that he should simply be the best that he could be. But at the same time, Edwin was already the worst of humanity. He had a body count that was high even for a war veteran. Not to mention that killer and those police officers he had killed when he was a boy. As the worst of humanity, the least he could do to serve the best of humanity was to take out those too ignorant to realize just how evil they truly were.

For the next month, Edwin followed that one woman, who had said that it wouldn't happen to her due to her father's protection. Her father was a senator, and in light of recent events with Alice Rose, he had appointed his daughter her own personal guards. Dorothy Edwards was her name. Both of the guards were big and heavily armed, and Dorothy was under constant surveilance. His month of following her was to stake out how she lived her life and how he would go about taking her out of this high security place. The manner in which Dorothy Edwards went about her life disgusted Edwin... It was as if she had no care for what she was making others do. It took every inch of self restraint for Edwin to not kill her and her guards in an explosion of flames. But he had to do this right, and that was how he would proceed.

After a month, Edwin realized that there was one time in which Dorothy was completely alone. When she bathed, her father ordered her guards to stand down. They stayed outside the door of the bathing room, however they did not moniter the window that lead out into the back yard. There was a three story jump, and so they probably assumed that no one could get in or out that way. With Edwin's inhuman strength, he could get both in and out that way. One day, when she and her guards were gone, Edwin snuck into the bathroom and waited for her to come back. And sure enough, she did and entered the bathroom to wash. She turned the water on, and Edwin steadied his breathing so as not to be heard. When the water was at its loudest, as Dorothy Edwards was undressing, Edwin came up behind her and quickly knocked her unconscious. Not even bothering to find anything to cover her up, Edwin carried her out the window he had entered and to an abandoned warehouse, where he tied her up and gagged her.

She came to maybe an hour later. When she saw that she was no longer in her home, wearing no clothes, tied up and in an abandoned warehouse, tears began to stream from her face. Edwin had learned to tell tears apart, and these were selfish tears--tears of a vain individual who was staring death in the eyes. She wasn't afraid for her father, who would be devestated by her loss. She was afraid for herself, and Edwin showed no mercy to that sort of person.

"'It won't happen to me'," Edwin began mockingly, while pacing around her. "That's what you said, isn't it?" Tears continued to stream from her face.
Edwin put his face next to hers, and breathed into her ear, "Well, Ms. Edwards, it looks like it has happened to you."
He walked around in front of her and pulled up a chair, leaning forward and staring into her face. "You saw everything Alice Rose did in her life as a mistake, didn't you?" His jaw was shaking as he spoke, curving up into an ironic smile, "'She got what was coming to her'. You thought that, didn't you?" she shook her head. "Didn't you?!" Edwin repeated, more angrily.
All over, Edwin was shaking with anger as he stood up once more and paced her again. This time, when he came around behind her he stopped, and came right next to her again. He ran his hand along her revealed body and said, "Funny how the one time the guards you brag about aren't watching you is the one time you are most exposed." Dorothy Edwards was gagged, but Edwin could tell that she was trying to say 'please...'
"I have no interest in your body, Ms. Edwards." he said with a laugh while standing in front of her once more. "I wouldn't give you the pleasure before death that would come from raping you... The pleasure at thinking that I found you appealing in any way. Just looking at you disgusts me." He folded his arms and stared into her eyes. "I will make your death slow and miserable."
The man before her changed his form, slowly like a mutation developing, into the werewolf who had confronted Alice Rose's killer. Still in front of her, he dropped his dark face down so that his nose was literally touching hers. "Just like a monster like you or I deserves."
