Felicia Nightingale
( To be read with the following song: “Paradise” by Coldplay )
00:00 – 00:35
As if it were a movie being played in slow-motion, Felicia is seen running through a town, being chased by two armed officers. There is a seeping bullet wound in her right arm, which she is cradling as she runs. Her clothes are torn, her lip has a cut and she is covered in blood and dirt, as if she were caught in a fight.
00:36 – 01:01
The motions snap back to reality, and Felicia runs through the town fast, pushing past people and heading up towards what looks to be a cliff. The officers chase after her, shouting for her to stop. As she stumbles and nudges through the crowd, she emerges overlooking a cliff-face, hanging over the ocean. Turning, she finds the officers with their pistols drawn, yelling at her to lie on the ground to be arrested. Not wanting to give in, she falls off the cliff as if to escape, but as she falls it looked to be a bad decision, as we close in to her eyes.
01:02 – 01:15
Her first memories: Felicia at the age of eight, frolicking in a field of flowers. Cut further along to her holding a butterfly in her hand, her face beaming with happiness as she watches it fly off into the sky, the daylight suddenly turning sharply to night as it pans back to her house.
01:16 – 01:28
A horrible memory is shown, broken into nine separate blocks. An argument between her mother and father breaks out, her mother sick of him drinking. Then he grabs her wrist and hits her in the face. But as it happens, the last three scenes show Felicia cowering under the table in fear, just as it zooms in onto her eyes as they close.
01:29 – 01:42
As if some sort of transition of her youth to adolescence, Felicia is floating in water, her body changing quickly as she advances to her life as a fourteen year old woman. The water surrounding her shows brief cuts of the memories between the two ages, each ripple in the water making it change over and over.
01:43 – 01:56
A fourteen year-old Felicia is seen running around with her friends, having a fun time before it cuts to a horrifying scene. Her best friend, being held by militia, is executed in front of Felicia, as she is being dragged off by two officers while she screams and tries to race over.
01:57 – 02: 06
Felicia is at the funeral now, standing by herself as the others disperse, leaving her alone. She shivers, rubbing her arms as she looks down mournfully, yet as if blaming herself. Tears run down her cheeks as she looks at the coffin.
02:07 – 02:20
Felicia is having nightmares in her bed, waking and trying to fall back to sleep as a thunderstorm rages outside of the foster home she lives in. As she closes her eyes one last time, she dreams of a better place for herself.
02:21 – 02:48
The dream is of Felicia once again in the mystical stream, changing to when she was seventeen. The memories are of her working her way into university, her style of fashion changing as well as her attitude as if from years of heartache. It is university where she meets Lyn, who is working there as a teacher and where Felicia has a change of heart.
02: 49 – 03:08
Things start off with Lyn and Felicia getting to know one another in flash memories, before they become lovers. But in the span of a year, Felicia fails to graduate and Lyn quits, leaving her behind. As Felicia wanders alone once more, the memories are back in the stream as she ages forward to twenty-four, the stream’s water looking as if it crystal-clear.
03:09 – 03:22
Felicia, now as she was when she found Durem after years of wandering, is overlooking the city, her mouth moving in silent speech as she begins her walk into the town. She seems to have confidence after her years of searching, as if something drew her there.
03:23 – 03:49
Now her memories most dear show in sequence: her finding Lyn, meeting the Devil May Cry ‘family’, finally finding a place she can call home, as she lives and hangs with everyone for the next few years, along with being back with Lyn for what seems to be her last time as they celebrate holidays and the like together.
03:50 – 04:17
The years are filled with adventure and happiness as Felicia ages in the stream to her current age at the beginning, thirty-three, and the water taking on a slightly red tint as her face is screwed up. The memories show her last days in Durem, bidding farewell to everyone as she takes her trip to Europe, but her face shows the truth as she fights to not cry, walking away slowly. The last thing seen is an envelope sliding under Lyn’s apartment door, stained with a few tears as reality catches up fast, showing Felicia survived the fall into the ocean.
04:18 – 04:37
Felicia is in what looks to be a prison cell, her arm bandaged and her clothes tattered and spotted with dirt and dry blood, as she looks up, sighing. She walks off, the only thing visible her feet as the light outside the cell illuminates them, before a single white feather is shown falling to the floor as the door closes.
