"The assignment is simple," Sensei Iruka glared out at her students under long strands of lavender hair, "you will work with a partner to write a one-paged story about someone or something you both admire." She placed a hand on her hip. "That means that all of you will have to speak with one another and become, yes, friends." The class groaned. "I know, I know. God forbid right? But you must. And to ensure that you do, I'm deciding partners."
She began to call out names. Ami sighed, tracing a half-motivated doodle on the corner of her quiz as she waited for her name to be called. How she dreaded the many projects Iruka assigned to her students and was slowly driving them all insane.
"Yoko Ami and Oshima Moko."
Ami's frown flipped a whole 90 degrees as she got assigned to her best friend. Flashing a pearly smile back at her partner, she turned back around and listened pleasantly to the unsatisfied groans of the other children as they received their partners. All of it didn't matter to her. She got a great partner.
There was a soft rapping at the door before someone slipped inside and took up the doorway. Ami inhaled sharply. The boy, Shouji, stood within the room, his bright blonde hair reflecting the light as he smiled pleasantly at her teacher and moved up to her. He handed her a slip of paper as they whispered briefly to one another before the teacher smiled and ushered him to the back of the room. Immediately his gray eyes spotted Ami and his smile widened, heading straight for the empty seat next to her.
"Hi there." he cooed, sitting beside her with an extraordinary ease.
"Hey," she responded, picking back up her pencil and pretending to be engrossed in her work. She could tell everyone was staring at her, could feel envious eyes burning holes into the back of her head because this amazingly hot guy was acting so informal with her. How did she know him? She could hear the whispering but Shouji seemed oblivious as he peeked over her shoulder and smiled.
"You're a good artist."
Ami shifted her gaze up to him, feeling her face grow hot under his steely glare before she turned it back down to her paper. Her pencil fumbled down into her lime green skirt and she quickly picked it back up and fiddled with it some more just to drop it.
"Not as good as Moko."
His eyebrow arched. "Moko?"
She pointed in the direction of her blonde friend, who waved merrily in there direction before Ami turned back around in embarrasment. He would surely be desperately interested in Moko now and completely ditch her.
"That's cool." he turned his gaze back to her, "so now that I'm in this class what are we doing?"
Ami paused. What?!
"In this class?"
He shrugged. His shoulders underneath his orange sweater were broad and tempting and she blushed, dumping her head back into her arms and drew as he said, " Yeah, I'm new here so they transferred me into this class. We're doing a project right? Want to be partners?"
Ami opened her mouth to refuse but Iruka had already jumped in from nowhere. "Of course she would!" she declared, "You, Moko, and Ami can all work together. It will be a grand report I'm sure! But because you have more people I'm expecting a two page report. Oh this will be wonderful!"
Shouji returned her smile.
"Yes, simply wonderful." His gaze turned back down to Ami.
"Yea," she muttered as she slipped away her stuff into her bookbag just as the bell rang, "Wonderful."
