Chapter Three
Valerie blinked open her eyes. She was in a white room, filled with sunlight from the open window. The only sound she could hear at first was the bleeping of monitors from all around her. A hospital ward?

"You're awake," came a familiar voice from nearby. Valerie looked up. It was Nat. "Oh, Nat, you're here?" Nat shrugged, "What are friends for? We might as well be family, you being an orphan and all." Valerie sat up, ignoring the reference to his minor crush on her. Only she could pick up on it, and it happened so often it was slightly wearing. She was a little shaky, but the pain had been dulled to almost nonexistance. She put a weak hand to her forehead. "What happened?"

"Well," Nat began, "First of all, It's Wednesday." Valerie's jaw dropped. "Relax, Val," Nat said, not allowing her the chance to speak, "I brought you all your schoolwork. The Doctor said..." He allowed himself a roll of his eyes. He put no stock in what doctors said. "...That you suffered a severe allergic reaction to the silver in the flute." He sighed. "Stupid, I know. If you were allergic - " "I would have been from birth." Valerie said. She thought that was odd, too. "Why's it suddenly acting up now?" Nat shrugged. "When I asked him, he said, 'We're still examining the patient.' But, I say we get you out of here asap...I dont trust these medical types."

Val got up from the bed. "When do I get discharged?" Nat picked a clipboard up from the bedside table and showed her the release papers. "I'm not supossed to have these until the doctor says you can leave, but I stole some and filled them out. You have to sign here -" He pointed "- or I would have had you out sooner." Valerie scowled. "You know how I feel about you..." She put in a deliberate pause. She knew he had a crush on her and it was just in her nature to make him uncomfortable for it. "...stealing things." She finished. He looked a little put out. "Come on, Val!"

She stood up. Grabbing the nearest pen, she signed her name shakily on the release forms. Jerking an i.v. out of her arm with loathing, she strode to the door. "Let's get out of here." She didn't look at him. Nat recognized her mood as how Valerie would always get, when she felt like she was on the brink of escaping her boring existance. "What's up, Val?" "I'm not satisfied with the answers I've got," she said, "And I don't think I'll be happy with a dignosis that says I can never play my flute again."

A nurse opened the doors that she had her hand on. Valerie took a few steps back in shock. The nurse began, "You should really get back to your bed, ma'am." Valerie shoved the clipboard into her hands. SHe looked at it in shock. "I don't like your answers." Valerie said, recklessly. The nurse looked taken aback by her sudden rudeness. "And I'll find some decent ones, no matter how long I have to look." She walked out of the ward. Nat stood and ran after her, muttering a hurried apology to the nurse.
