Chapter Nine
"But why? Why are they chasing you?"

Valerie and Nat stood on the beach in the darkness. It was a little past ten o'clock. They had siezed thier chance when the chase had died down and flitted down to the beach under cover of darkness. They had decided it was best for Valerie not to go home far a little bit, in case they had decided to stake it out. She had explained the best she could, but she had refrained from telling him it was she that had committed the murder of the night before, and she didn't tell him her true identity. She was too afraid that she would lose him forever. Even though she was probably going to lose herself soon anyway.

"I can't tell you, Nat. You're better off not knowing anyway." She slipped off her shoes and socks and stepped into the icy shallows. Her thoughts and emotions were so confused, she was still numb with the wieght of everything that had happened night. She was still getting over what Nat had done, but she was more wistfully happy than she was angry about it. In fact, she was amazed that the worst and the best thing that had ever happened to her could happen in the span of an hour.

"But, I'm scared for you, Valerie. I don't want you to..." She could see the fear in his eyes even in the almost absolute darkness. He still had not shaken off her first few words, about her own impending death. Even though she assured him, dishonest though it was, that she was frightened and had exaggerated, he still hadn't forgotten her words. "If that happened," he continued, "what would I do? What would we all do?" Valerie shook her head, biting her lip, and turned away. She didn't want him to see her cry, but no more tears fell. It seemed she had run out of tears to spill.

"I'm," Valerie began, holding herself tightly, shivering, her shoulders hunched against the wind. "cold."

Nat walked up and gave her a hag from behind, his arms wrapped around her neck. She buried herself in his embrace, savoring it, wondering if she'd ever feel this way again. Suddenly, she felt something in her gut. This emotion was unlike anything she had ever felt before. She felt it replace the fear for her life. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Nat, his face buried in her hair. This emotion was fear for his, and she knew, whatever would happen to her, she could not let him get hurt.

She suddenly broke his embrace, a sincere smile cracking her tear-flecked, pale face. "Nat, will you promise me something?" He laughed, "Want to marry me already?" He said, his sarcastic humor breaking the dismal air, and Valerie responded as she always did. She pushed him, hard, and he landed flat on his back in the ocean water. "Oh, I'm sorry." She said, laughing but still feeling slightly guilty. She reached down to help himp up, but he grabbed it and gave a mighty tug. She lost blance and landed on top of him. She blushed furiously and, thanking her lucky stars it was dark, rolled off him at once and onto the sandy wake of the breaking waves. She grabbed his hand and held it tightly. "Stop, listen to me, really." She said, rolling onto her side to look at him. He did the same.

"Anything, Valerie. Just let me know." He said. She took a deep breath. "No matter how much you want to, please, don't come after me tomorrow night." She glanced up at the moon, and she knew it was full behind the overcast clouds, and it would be tomorrow, too, for the last time before it waned again. "Tommorow, I won't be myself. And I'd hate for you to get hurt." She stood up, dripping wet, her wet burnette locks lank around her shoulders. He stood up next to her and kissed her again. Valerie wasn't expecting it, but returned the affection graciously. "Whatever you say," He said, smiling, removing a lock of hair from her face. Valerie smiled and reluctantly broke away from him.

"It's time for me to go home." He nodded, he looked reluctant too. He took her hand. "Yes, I'll take you home." He led her away from the shoreline and up to the street.

When they arrived at her house, he let he back in through the window in her room, because it locked from the outside. With a final kiss, he closed the window and locked it. Valerie pressed her hands to the glass and watched him leave as it started to rain. She began to cry again as she canged out of her wet clothes. She decided what to do after she was dress for bed. The storm had intensified as she pulled and empty notepad from her top drawer and began to write...

Oh, ah... I miss the ocean sooooo much. Particularly the evening ocean. Sigh. Oh well. Um, good job... couple of mistakes (always have to add my evil criticism... don't take it too harshly } surprised ) but overall the writing style is superb. Poor Nat. His "Girlfriend" won't talk to him about anything...
