Don't Cry For Me, Argentina
2004-08-31

Well, I asked for a sign and got it. I called Victoria's Secret to find out why my dress had been returned. Apparently they had charged the dress to my card, but when they went to actually package the dress, they found out there wasn't one left in my size.

*sigh*

So I'm not goin' to Argentina this year. It's cool. I asked for a sign and boom, there it was. The timing must be off somehow. Better that I not spend a lot of money on a trip and then lose my job. I could afford the trip, but if I had to get a new job before then I doubt I could get the time off. Hopefully I won't lose my job though. There's some weirdness goin' on there. Looks like some MAJOR restructuring. I'll update when I figure out what the hell is goin' on. Keep your fingers crossed for me. 0_0

So anyway I need a plan for what the blazes I'm gonna do if my job goes south. Naturally I'll have to get on unemployment while I'm lookin' for a new job. Livin' ain't free I have found, and that royally sucks. So here it is...

Money Making Schemes for When I Lose My Job

1. Art commissions- I've done these before, which is why they're at the top of the list. Go with what you know. I already have the price list worked out from before. The only problem is that I don't have NEAR the site traffic when I did these before. Well, the other problem is that any freelance work is sporadic and not always dependable. Still, this was good money when I did it before.

2. Regular shop updates- These are going to be the easier designs, the ones that I can do fairly quickly. I'm hoping that when I start updating my site with new artwork from commissions I will update my site traffic and bring more shoppers to the store. The problem with the shop is that while my site traffic is slow, so are sales. Painfully slow.

3. Sketch portfolios- Cafepress also has books that one can make and I could possibly add some sketch portfolio books to the current inventory. The problem with this is that it would take quite a few sketches to make a book and my current sketchbooks aren't up to par.

4. Art prints- Cafepress has poster prints available too. Unlike the sketch portfolio, these would be fully detailed, coloured, completed works. I REALLY need to work on my skills to offer something like that.

5. ABC book- I was working on one of these freelance for someone, but I couldn't justify taking so much less than my going rate and so I am not doing it anymore. Using Cafepress I could make one on my own. I don't know how well an ABC book would go over though. It would be just another thing to add to the inventory. I don't see a lot of income from it.

6. Online comic- If I made an online comic, there would be an entire line of goods that I could add to my shop. The main problems are, I don't think I could steadily come up with stories for one. Maybe if I had a writer... Of course if I did, I'd have to be sharing any of the profits.

7. UFO catcher dolls- I think there are places online that tell how to make these. There seems to be a higher demand for them than the supply. This would be a good draw, but I would have to find instructions on how to make them or figure out how to make them on my own. Customs would be sooo cool though, don't you think?

8. Hats- Along the same line as the dolls. I could find some hat patterns at a fabric shop and once I got good enough at making them, could possibly make my own designs.

9. Purses- I think I could make some really cool purses with decoupage or if I get some cool patterns.

10. Pr0n game- This idea is the craziest of course and yet would most likely make the most money. The anime porn games look so easy to make. I would just need Director. I've got experience with the program, so it would just be a matter of relearning it, designing the characters, drawing the static scenes, and coming up with the basic gameplay. (The scary part of this idea is I already have a complete concept. 0_0)

The cool thing about all of these ideas would be that I'd be working on my own terms and doing creative things. Unfortunately that is also the negative side. I am a notorious unmotivated procrastinator. I can make grand plans, but actual execution is another matter. Also, being creative things, I have to worry about what happens when the well runs dry. Although I did think the same thing when I started writing fanfics and I currently have around 20 fics finished, 10 in progress, and ideas for something like 40 more. The ideas come faster than I can write.

That makes me think that I could probably draw, design, and sew all day long and never run out of ideas. Heck, I might even come up with some new ones. Leave a note if you can think of any easy artsy thing that I could maybe do for cash. ^_~

At the moment I'm just gonna wait this out at work and see what happens. I'm also gonna start sketching a ton more and joining various other art boards to get more traffic coming to my new site. We'll see, we'll see.

I love having a plan (even if it is scary).
