Lost and Found

Lyude treaded up the stairs slowly. He was tired—no—exhausted, but he couldn’t sleep. He was never able to sleep. There was so much going on. There was always so much going on, but there’s a lot more now than ever before…and nothing to do about it….

It has been three years since Malpercio was defeated. Lyude had taken up the post of leading Alfard back up from its ruins. The work was hard and tedious, but Lyude overexerted himself in order to get work done. He completely changed the organizational structure of the Empire and decentralized the some of the power, letting it seep down into the lower ranked heads. But he made sure that all works and reports had to go through him at some point so that he can keep trap of all ideals and make sure that no one abused their posts. It was a very difficult to do, considering that Lyude had to either promote and demote officers or fire them, which has posed many difficulties between him and the rest of the staff. But very slowly, he redeemed himself in the eyes of everyone.
The first year was very tiresome. It took a long while for Lyude to get things settled so he could work. But it quickly showed him who sided with him and who didn’t: the people of Azha were all for him, while the people of Mintaka were against him. This stayed consistent in the workforce, too. He found that his only solution to this problem is to have representatives of both areas to work with him. For Minataka, he chose his brother and sister, for they were quite popular with that area. As for Azha…well, it wasn’t easy to find someone like that. It was a long search until he found someone whom he could trust to be a good representative. Ironically, it turned out to be the youngest secretary in the workforce—and an old acquaintance of his—that received the highest recommendations and ultimately the post. The boy’s name was Ashten—in reality, it was Atticus, but Lyude was never able to memorize the name, so Atticus made it easier for him and chose Ashten as his nickname. Lyude was grateful for that, and also slightly embarrassed…
Ashten was an enigma that could never be figured out. When Lyude received recommendations for him, he was under the impression that Ashten was mature and responsible—not to mention quite serious. It was the opposite of what Lyude knew about him, but he figured that times change, and do did people. When he hired Ahsten, he learned that while it was true that Asheten was responsible, he was barely ever serious and completely childish and immature. Thus, there was always heat between Ashten and Skeed and Vallye. It was the worst working condition when they were all in the room together and always wound up with Lyude listening to each team in order while the other one waited outside. Yet because of this, the first year went by with a lot of work getting done. Lyude also received a good amount of help from the other countries, which he was extremely grateful for. There was so much work to be done and not enough workers half the time…
By the second year, Alfard was rising out of ruins very quickly, and the division between Mintaka and Azha was bridging over. Somewhere near the beginning of the year—Lyude will never forget it—a country-wide discovery was made as the earth shook and wrecked havoc upon Alfard. It was called an Earthquake, and it became a frequent occurrence in Alfard. Lyude sent a message asking the people of Duhr for any information they had about these events. It was about two months after that when he received a lengthy reply explaining the reasons earthquakes occurred and about their magnitude. With that information always in mind, Lyude made sure to consider the possibility of making any construction ideas less dangerous and more livable, and was repeatedly grateful that the earthquakes that hit the nation were very weak and didn’t cause much damage…
At the beginning of the third year, the most disastrous even happened: a powerful earthquake that was more violent than any of the others hit Alfard. Lyude, who was walking to his desk with Ashten, complaining about breakfast, by his side, was knocked to the ground and couldn’t move throughout the earthquake. And at some point, he had blacked out from a powerful jerk that caused him to hit his head on the corner of the hall. When he came to, there was a lot of ruin surrounding him. As he directed the cleanup of the Imperial Fortress and sending soldiers to help out the rest of the nation, two messengers, one from Azha and another from Mintaka, came at the same time, only a few seconds apart, with the same message: Alfard was lost at sea. Apparently, earthquake had broken Alfard apart from the main land and hurled it to the sea. The news had put everyone out into a shock. Lyude thanked the messengers and told them to get going. Then he instantly ordered everyone to get data about what the effects of this problem were. Needless to say, it was bad.
They were completely cut off. If they knew where they were, they would have at least been able to call for help. But they were completely lost. Alfard didn’t have the materials to sustain itself, and Lyude had grown very dependent on the trade system between the nations. But now, there was no way they could do anything. The Empire would not last for long without materials…but everyone remained optimistic. After an earthquake like that, Ashten had stated, the nations were bound to notice and send out search teams to find Alfard. It was only going to be a matter of time before they were found. It had greatly reassured everyone, but…
It’s been a year now, and no one has found them yet. There was so much work that needed to be done, but no materials to do it. Alfard was dying. There was nothing left but waiting for something to happen. Even Ashten, who remained optimistic until the very last straw, had stopped complaining about the lack of cookies with each meal. The atmosphere at work had become extremely gloomy and stagnant. Everyone came to work so that they can just be there. There was nothing else to do…Lyude had tried to think of a way out of this situation, but there was none. They had no ships to traverse the sea, and no way to make ships…there weren’t any materials at all! And there had been no rain, either. Everything had become so scarce, and people actually had to ration out food and water in order to preserve their lives!...This was not a mere depression, this was the death of the country…Lyude often prayed for someone to know what to do, for someone to take advantage of the situation and rise to power…but there was no one…no one at all to save the country…

Lyude sighed deeply as he reached the roof. It was sometime in early morning, but well before dawn. He had spent many sleepless nights up here. Lyude felt heavily responsible for the fate of the Empire. He would simply stand there, on the lookout for anything that might resemble a signal in the sky, but there was nothing but the stars. Thoughts floated in and out of his head in the most subconscious ways. There was nothing left…nothing at all…no hope…
This night was no different than any of the other nights. It was so cold outside—it’s always cold at night now, colder than ever before, because of the sea—that he was able to see his breath as it left him. He wore his now usual attire, which was no protection against the cold. He stood there and watched time pass. He came up here to clear his head, but all that there was here was the pain of reality…
Dawn was slowly rising in the horizon behind him. He sighed deeply; another night has passed without any sign of salvation. This was getting ridiculous…time and again, Ashten had brought hope upon them by announcing that his sister was studying in Anuenue’s School of Magic. He said, time and time again, that her worry for him can drive the world to do impossible things. For the sheer of true hope, Lyude had kept hope that Ashten would be miraculously correct. He also kept hope that his comrades would do all that is in their power to find him…but there it was to no avail. There was nothing out there…no one to find them…
Lyude sighed deeply as he turned to face the dawn. He stood there, and watched the sun rise to the heavens, to ready itself for another day of scorching the desert. As he faced towards the staircase, a loud and beautiful sound pierced the stillness of the air over the desolate Alfard. Lyude looked up, as the sound had come from the skies. He searched the skies until he found the source of the sound—it was something that was shining brightly with the reflection of the dawn. The shining something was flying against the dawn’s light, racing towards Lyude. As Lyude watched with cautious interest, the shining object let out another loud trilling sound. Lyude watched it get closer while his mind raced through a list of what possible monsters it might be. As the creature got closer, its shine was starting to disappear, and Lyude noticed that it was a bird. It instantly hit him—this was a Wazn bird, more specifically, a snow bird. Its kind had appeared after the nations had returned to land, it was said that these bird has the power to bring a cold front to wherever they were traveling. Lyude didn’t believe in that rumor, seeing as he had received many letters from Wazn by the means of those birds. The bird zoomed towards him, and he was quick to recognize it. It was Kalas’ bird—a bird he had seen so many times before; he received most of his letters from this bird! Lyude waved his hands in the air, as to signal the bird, but the bird had already seen him, and was coming in for landing. It landed heavily on Lyude’s shoulder, tired from its long travels. Lyude picked up the bird from his shoulder and held it in one hand while petting it with the other. It was a large, swan-like bird, and completely white all except for the lower part of its neck and the top of his head, which were deep shades of blue. The bird looked up at Lyude and gave out a tired sound with a tone of ‘I made it! Sorry for being so late!’ the bird then tried to lift itself up, as to give Lyude a letter. Lyude found the letter and untied it. With his heart beating, he read,
‘To whomever this reaches,
Please let this letter reach the head of Alfard. If Lyude is reading this, then PLEASE send a reply as soon as possible. But don’t overwork the bird, I want him to be able to reach Wazn.
Kalas’
Lyude’s heart was hurting him with the beating of excitement. With the letter and one hand the bird back on his shoulder, he raced towards the stairs, only to stop as something cold fell onto his face. He looked up, only to watch as the heavens poured cold rain upon the land. Without even feeling it, the rising of the scorching sun was hidden behind dark clouds, and brought rain to Alfard. It wasn’t a heavy rain, yet it was far from a drizzle. It was just the right rain fall for the desert, and soon, the whole desert will bloom into life again. This was perfect…and Lyude, with a serene smile on his face, headed slowly towards the stair case, making sure that the small letter would not get wet on the way. He finally felt at peace, there was hope in the land again.
